Adrenaline. That's the one and only word I could use to express what was piercing my body as I saw Avery laying there pinned down by a mangled zombie covered in blood with matted hair. I have to do something, but if I do I'm sure to be risking my life. Avery is my best friend and he's the love of my life. I never wanted to admit until I realized how much I needed him to be alive.
I have to save him. Even if it means risking my own life to save his, I have to do it. I ran over to Avery knocking the zombie off of him.
"Shaylene?! What are you doing?! Run! Get out of here!"
"I'm not leaving without you Avery. We are going together! I won't let you die when I know I could have saved you. Come on before we're attacked again! Now!"
Avery jumped to his feet grabbing my hand and starting to run. We are going to be safe. We are getting out of here. Avery had let go of my hand at this point so we could run faster. We were escaping the madness that was the city. That is until I felt cold, stiff, and boney fingers wrap themselves around my ankle causing me to fall face first into the pavement. I looked around dazed from hitting my head so hard. Blood running down my face somewhere from my hairline. I looked at the cold lifeless fingers that were around my ankle and slowly realized that the zombie was already crawling towards me closer to my face. I was about to call out to Avery and push the zombie away when I felt the worst pain imaginable in the back of my shoulder. I screamed. That's all I could do as the zombie ripped flesh from my body savoring the taste.
"SHAYLENE!!!!" Avery screamed as he ran over plunging his knife deep into the center of the monsters head. He pulled me up. I was sure not to show I was hurt because I didn't want him to know.
"Come on! Before more come!"
Without thinking we just ran. We ran and ran and ran until we reached the edge of the small city we grew up in. At the edge there was a small clearing surrounded by trees.
"Let's head over there. It looks safe."
"Ok." Avery gently held my hand and led me to the clearing. My mind was becoming a little hazy, but I was set on not letting Avery know about the problem at hand. We sat down in the middle of the clearing just enjoying the silence and peacefulness. I had to say it before it was too late.
I turned to Avery. My heart thumping against my ribs threatening to burst out of my chest.
"Hey Avery, I have something I need to tell you."
"Sure Shay, what's up?"
"Listen I have been keeping this in for too long, but I have to tell you now or never."
"Shay it's alright. You can tell me anything."
"Avery. Avery I love you. You're my best friend and I wouldn't change that for the world."
I said it really quickly not looking up from my lap the whole time. Avery was staring at me dumbfounded. He didn't feel the same. OMG I'm such an idiot. As I was scolding myself Avery lifted my head up to face him. I felt arms wrap around me tightly making me flinch as the arm pressed against my hidden wound.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"I-I was scared."
"Well don't be because I love you to." He kissed me. He actually kissed me. It didn't last very long, but I knew that it meant a lot. Now comes the hard part.
"Avery there's something else." I said turning my back to him. I removed the jacket I had on to cover the blood soaked t-shirt underneath.
"Shaylene what are you- oh my god. No Shaylene. Please tell me its not-" tears were appearing in his eyes.
"I was bit. I didn't want to do this but there was no escaping it. I'm sorry." I whispered.
He didn't say anything. He just looked down to his jacket sleeve and pulled it up revealing the deep teeth markings imbedded in his wrist.
"It happened when the zombie pinned me down. Hey it looks like we have one more thing in common with each other." Tears streaming down his face now, while letting out a weak laugh.
"Avery, what do we do. I don't want to die. I want to stay with you. We can't leave each other." I cried jumping into his arms.
"We don't have to." He said pulling out two hand guns from a small backpack on the ground next to him.
"Avery where did you get those and what are you doing with them?" I manage to say.
"I got them from the store we were in and I kept them hidden. With these we won't have to leave each other."
"What are you doing?" I asked as he put the gun in my hand.
"We are gonna leave this earth together. Okay?"
"Okay." I said with tears running down my red face. We held the guns to each others heads ready to pull the triggers.
"Are you ready?" He asked terror spread across his face.
"As ready as I'll ever be. You?"
"Not really but what choice do I have?"
"I love you Avery."
"And I love you Shaylene."
We shared one last hug.
"Goodbye Avery."
"Not goodbye. Just see you later alligator. I'll miss you."
"In a while crocodile. I'll miss you too."
We both cried as we counted down together.

A shot rang out through the city as the two teens feel over hand in hand. They died together just as they wanted. They loved each other until the end. Birds flew out of bushes and trees. It went perfectly quiet as the ring of the gun shot faded out. The sun started setting over the two bodies setting a beautiful orange glow upon them. One question went through their heads as they pulled their triggers. "How did it ever come to this?"
