::DMITRIUS::

We were back at school again. The smell of new filled the hall. New book bags, new books, new clothes, new cells. The smack of high fives being exchanged echoed in the ancient building and I didn’t seem to be able to ignore the loud chatter. Everyone wanted to gossip with their best friends about what happened over their vacations. I was forced to catch snippets over who slept with whom and who was dating who and, of course, who had gotten what from mummy and daddy. Not how I wanted to start the day. By the sounds of it, the Hamptons had been pretty full of West Montgomery Prep teens this vacation. The tell-tale tans and sun-bleached hair were hints enough.

Maids trailed behind us as Raine and I walked down the hallway, aware of the looks we were getting. Lack of sun had made us paler over the vacation and our hair had been styled at the salon yesterday despite my complaints. At the moment, we were definitely looking out of place among the others. I could imagine how ghostly our complexions seemed while walking through the sea of tanned bodies. Glancing over at Raine, I saw that she had disappeared to go to her room so I went to go to mine on the other side of the staircase.

Pulling out the keys, I pushed the right one into the lock. Tap Tap Tap! I froze as a familiar sound raised the hairs on the back of my neck.

Coming down the hall was Zachery Benson. It was as though his entire name was one word the way people said it sometimes. Though I knew that it made no difference, I fixed my shirt and tossed the blonde fringe out of clear, blue eyes.

Today was going to be the day. How hard could it be to strike up a conversation with him, right? People did it all the time. My heartbeat thudded in my ears. He was sauntering over to me with a new girl on his arm. I knew that Vanessa was his girlfriend but there was no taming Zachery Benson…especially not on his first day back. I had accepted that a long time ago but even that didn’t stop the crush from developing.

The girl laughed at everything he said as they walked down the hall. I couldn’t give the girl wrong. The man could be charming when he wanted to be. Zachery’s eyes were hidden by a pair of sunglasses and he smiled at the girl easily. His grace and swagger were undefeatable. I was yet to meet anyone, with sight or without, who could grab attention and hold it without even noticing. It was sexy, especially on him.

When he was two seconds away from me, I took a breath, “Hi Zachery.”

He nodded in my direction and replied with a short but friendly, “Hey.”

The reply was so vague that it could have been aimed at anyone. I doubted that he even knew who he had greeted in the first place. By now I knew not to underestimate Zachery, but there were so many people who were constantly around him that I wouldn’t blame him if he didn’t know that it was me. He couldn’t possibly know everyone’s voice and I rarely spoke to him in the first place.

I opened my door and went inside. It was empty. Most people in school had roommates but Raine, Zac and I were the only three without any for security reasons. After taking a quick shower I changed into my clothes. The shower cleared my mind a lot and I needed that more than I could say.
