"Ma, I'm telling you, I'll be fine. It's just a party."
Anna's mother, YooJin, wants her to dress up elegantly by bringing a glam team at their mansion. Yes, mansion. Her mother is a well-known businesswoman and philanthropist.
"Anna, you have to be prepared well. I can't allow my Princess to be ignored."
YooJin has always consider her daughter a Princess, when in reality she knows how unladylike she is.
"Ma, I told you to stop calling me that. And I don't want this dress." She said pointing to a haltered chiffon white dress in front of her carried by Ms Daisy, her mother's personal stylist. They are inside her room and YooJin is still trying to convince her.
"OK, let's have a deal. You let this be and I'll leave you to your teaching job. I won't interfere. Deal?"
This has been their interaction since Anna turned 21. They would talk like they're having business deals. She remember she almost rebel against her when she would tell Anna what to do. YooJin knew better from then. Her daughter was a sweet child until her father died when she was 18.
When Bong, her late husband, a ruthless politician was killed, Anna became aloof and hostile. If not for her affection for children, Anna would still be. YooJin was thankful that she allowed her to study abroad and pursue teaching.
But she had asked her to postpone her master due to Yoojin's public service endeavors. Even before her husband died she has been very active in social services. She was actually more favored by her husband's partners than himself. So when he died, news about him having a kept mistress, she received sympathy and Bong was condemned by public. Rumors of him spread being murdered by his ambitious mistress.
"Ma, are you listening? I ask if you're serious in allowing to take my master and teach?"
YooJin was snapped out from her deep thinking.
"Of course, you've been bugging me and I think it's high time you go out the limelight and help me with all the functions within the company and be with me in my service."
"Ma, I've told you I want to be a teacher. And you said before that you will not force me to run the company!" Anna is a bit exasperated now.
"Anna, you can teach and help me run the company at the same time. And besides, I just haven't found a suited successor yet."
YooJin added, "If only I could find a suitable man for you. It would be easier to handle the company." She make it seems she said only to herself.
"Can you leave us alone for a moment?" Anna asks the people inside with them.
When all had left.
"Ma, we've talked about this, I'm not going to any arranged date not more so for an arranged marriage."Anna has been skeptical about it since she was young. She actually dreams of a fairy tale romance, not that she let everyone knows about it.
"Did I say I'll send you to one? All I'm asking is for you to accompany me to the gala and wear appropriate dress. Is it really that hard?" She is now using her charm to her.
"OK, Ma. We'll do your bid this time. But as you promise, I'll finish my master and do what I want." Anna knows her in having true to her words. It's just sometime her mother would be so cunningly charming to get what she wants. (Well, Anna also gets what she wants. They're mother and daughter, right?)
Anna now believes she made the wrong deal with YooJin. She's feeling uncomfortable with the looks and stare of the people at the party. She's not very used to be around socialites and well off people.
"YooJin, is this now your Princess Anna?"
"Ahh, yes! Anna, remember Representative Park?"
"Yes, Ma. Good evening, Mr Park."
"You're all grown up now. I remember you were just running around and eating a lot when you were a kid. Now look at you, so much a lady now. I'm sure you have made many men cried, eh?"
Mr Park is one of those few people that she knows within her parent's association. And though, Anna never liked politics or social gatherings, she likes Mr Park as he is a good person, Anna thought.
"GwanSoo, if only what you said is true. But you know, Anna, she never liked to be around too many people. I'm glad she came with me here."
"By the way, where's SeokHan?"
"He is there talking to SungWon. Anna, do you remember my son, you were playmates before?"
"Mr Park, I remember him, but we're not playmates."
"Anna!" YooJin is a bit embarrassed by that.
"Hahaha!! Yes, I remember you punch him when he took your candy."
Mr Park is still amused when he thought of his son's relationship with Anna. She's not actually fond of his son.
And speaking of the boy..
"Hi, YooJin. Finally you arrived and who's this beautiful Princess with you?"
He actually knew she's Anna. It's just a very long time since he last saw her.
"SeokHan, remember Anna, my daughter. Anna, you know SeokHan, you're friends since you were kids." YooJin made sure that her tone tells Anna to not be rude.
"Of course, Ma." She's thinking now of ways to leave the place without hassle.
"Anna, you look gorgeous. I didn't recognize you. How long has it been since I saw you?"
Anna doesn't like the way he's looking at her. She really needs to get away now, before she lose it.
"Ahm, Ma, I'll just go to ladies room. Excuse me, Mr Park." She said completely ignoring SukHan and hurriedly left them.
"Please pardon my daughter, she's just getting used to be around people."
"That's fine, YooJin. Shall we go to meet General Lim, he's over there. SukHan, wait for Anna and be with her, she doesn't know everyone here."
"Sure, Dad. No problem. YooJin, don't worry, we'll be with you."
"Thanks, SeokHan."
But she knows better. Anna wouldn't be. She just hopes that Anna will be soon comfortable with this kind of lifestyle. Her daughter needs to.
