I grab the first aid kit by my feet and sling it on my arm. As I lean down for the knife, I hear another weapon whistle past my left ear, I grab the knife and look up just in time to see it enter Casper's body (Kieren is not going to be happy). I fling the knife behind me and know its hit my target when I hear a scream. I keep running, I don't want to know who my first target was, and get to the spear. Excellent. I pick it up and carry on running, still toward the cornucopia, I can feel the spear is metal, very light and cold. I look to my left and see Karanina fleeing with a luminous green backpack and an axe in to the forest. I feel a bit of relief that she is safe, for now. I have this parental feeling for her ever since the time in training.
I look back to the cornucopia and am greeted with a fist to my face. I am slammed to the floor, nearly landing on the spear. I feel a body land on my stomach knocking the wind out of me. I look to find Sarah-Jayne is the one that is on top of me. I can feel a hot liquid running down my face into my mouth, it taste sort of metallic, great I think she has broke my nose. I can feel she isn't very heavy so I use my weight to roll over and become the one sitting on top, screams echo all around me. I punch her in the face, I feel the crunch of her nose breaking as I make impact. She tries to fight back but my feet are on her arms stopping them from moving, all she can do is kick and scream, hoping someone will come to the rescue. I hit her again when I feel something hit my arm, it's a knife. I pull it out and go in for the kill. Her eyes are wide with fear and tears are starting to stream down her face.
"This is where it ends for me, my mum. Must of been luck it don't run in the family" she says barely audible above the racket.
"I'm sorry, I really am" I tell before running the knife across her neck, beads of blood start appear. I get up and run, I don't want to see any more. I don't turn back.
I've still got the knife in my hand, the blade has blood on it. I want to get rid of it as soon a possible. I lock on a target running towards me once we are within 10 foot of each other I throw it, it lands in her skull, she drops down to the floor dead. I didn't recognize the face particularly but she she looked one of the youngsters. That was it Haley Young. District 12 are of the running. That has to be a record, both gone within 15 minutes! By now I am at the mouth of the cornucopia. I choose my weapons, a belt full of knifes, a machete and three spears. I can get the rest later.
Looking around there are at least 10 bloodied bodies on the floor. Make that 11, Masie has just finished off Raye Attleby. There are the last few battles going on but the rest of the tributes have disappeared. Heading into the forest on my right is figure, its along shot but here goes. I fling one of the spears, it misses and lands about 5 foot away. Shit. I run forwards closing 50ft gap to around 40, I keep running and finally once they are in range I throw another spear with all my might. It hits their backpack, but that cant of been enough to protect them as they promptly fall to the ground. I go to get the spears but a body besides me moves and jumps up, and starts running. It takes me a second to figure out what happened but in that time they have they get a good head start, wrenching the spear out the ground and the other out the body before turning round and saying "Give Aaron my love will ya? Ill be waiting". Tami from district 10. That was a good plan. I bet sponsors will be queuing up to help her.
I chuck the machete at her, it looks like its going to hit her but at the last second she stumbles and it digs into the tree in front of her.
"Thanks for the knife!"
"Its a machete!" I shout. Idiot!
"Whatever, its sharp and its now mine" she shouts over her shoulder before disappearing into the forest.
I was going to leave the body where it was before remembering the backpack. I see its a girl, laid face down in the snow. She looks like one of the taller tributes. Reddish coloured hair, that was messy and came just past her shoulders. Not wanting to see my victim, I hack off the pack. I finish and jog back to the cornucopia, while looking through the bag. A loaf of bread, two packs of crackers, beef jerky, a black piece of material, some iodine tablets, a large flask and a large coil of rope.
I reach the cornucopia, and join the other careers raiding the stack of goodies we claim ours, just in time for the first death toll. They fire on canon for each dead tribute, initially the do it after the blood bath so we know exactly how many are dead and aren't as distracted with killing each other. I count eleven. Nealry alf of us gone in the first day. I join in with the rest of them in looking through the crates, several are stuffed with food, one larger one is full of medical kit - a splint, fever tablets, bandages, gauze's and an array of other items I would not have what to do with. For the rest of the day we set up camp in the mouth of the cornucopia blocking the goods from any other tributes grasp and sort out a rota for look out. When dark falls, the air becomes very cold, I figure out that the black material was a heat reflecting sleeping bag. In the distance there is a fire burning. Idiot, that's a sure way to be killed. Sure enough there is soon a boom marking a death making half of the 24 are already on their way home to their families in a casket.
The national anthem starts playing and and the seal lights up the sky. The first faces to appear are Filicity and Haran from District 3, then Garathe from District 5, Sarah-Jayne and John from District 6, both Darlia (I recognise the hair and realise she was the girl with the bag) and Wesley from District 8. Una from District 9, George from District 10. District 11 has lost Raye and 12 are out with Haley and Casper both being dead.
