A/N: So this is the first real chapter of this story, and I thank all of you who have read this far. And (insert long speech how I'm disappointed with how this chapter turned out and a list of excuses of why you should read the whole book anyways.) Thanks!
It was late at night (or early in the morning. Percy wasn't sure) when the pounding came on Percy's door.
He picked his way around the rooms obstacles- dirty laundry, papers of school work, textbooks, and empty minute-made rice containers- and opened the door. Squinting against the bright light of the hallway, he noticed Annabeth standing in front of him and looking awake as ever. He could practically see the gears in her head turning, her mind working in overdrive.
"I need to talk to you, Frank, and Reyna, now." Was all she said, and based on her tone and her appearance, Percy could tell she'd had a demigod dream. An urgent one.
"What it is?" he asked.
"The usual. A god needs help. It's our problem now." She said, semi- bitterly, and Percy felt his own mood sour a little bit that the gods were once again messing up their lives.
"Come on, let's go." she said turning to leave.
"Um...?" he gestured to his wardrobe.
Annabeth seemed to actually see him for the first time that night, and burst into laughter at his star-pattern pajamas, causing Percy the lightest blush.
"Okay. Maybe change first."
"Yeah." he nodded and closed the door.
Eventually the four of them, Percy, Reyna, Frank, and Annabeth were gathered in one place. They debated for a minute, but decided not to wake anyone else up until morning.
"Another thing, and part of the reason I wanted to talk to you now instead of waiting until morning," added Annabeth, glancing around at them and lowering her voice, "is that I'm not sure how much of this information should be shared with how many people."
"I'm tired of guessing. Whatcha got?" Asked Percy, casually throwing upwards and catching a small red ball like a true ADHD demigod.
Annabeth took a deep breathe and began her explanation. "Lady Hecate came in my dream and told me basically that there's another world we never knew about." If her previous statements of importance weren't enough to captivate their attention, that sentence was. Frank leaned forwards a little bit. Percy abruptly stopped throwing and catching the ball. Reyna visibly showed no change of mood.
Annabeth continued. "Apparently Hecate decided it was a good idea to bless a group of mortals with magic. That group of people grew with time, and now there's a whole hidden world of 'witches' and 'wizards'."
"Why did Hecate chose now to tell us this?"
Percy realized suddenly that he had been expecting someone to be skeptical the moment Annabeth said 'witches'. But as Reyna asked questions without any doubt that Annabeth was right, he realized he wasn't going to question it either. They had all just gained the sort of trust that couldn't be questioned unless you knew as fact one of the others was wrong or lying.
"Because she needs us to fetch something that we'll have to interact with them to get."
Instantly all three were ready with another question, but Annabeth put up one hand and said "Just let me tell you the full story, okay?"
All nodded. "Anyways, apparently part of being goddess of the mist involves doing this ritual every ten years that requires a tooth from the largest snake that ever lived. And the largest snake that ever lived happens to be in a secret part of a castle that has been converted into a school for witches and wizards." She paused, aware that she had just put a lot of information forth. Percy winced, and the others glanced at him. "Not a big fan of snakes." he explained.
