Prologue
I remember darkness. It circled around me like fog. Entering my lungs and nose, I coughed waving the thick smoke away. I could have screamed but every time I tried smoke was sucked in. I remembered what my teacher had said when in this situation. I got down on my hands and knees and began to crawl. Smoke still took over the inside of my body, toasting it, burning it. My skin was hot and itchy. I felt tears roll down my face but I pressed on.
My small body shook with fear.
All I could see was black thick smoke. Red, orange and yellow flames licked the behind the walls, telling me to turn a new way. The sound of wood spliting and fire cracking rang in my ears blocking out the sirens that were raging outside my parents house.
I couldn't remember what it felt like to be cold. Heat and smoke clung to my insides. I could feel my lungs blackening and I felt my eyes burn and grow heavy. My elbows buckled and my body laid stiff. I was giving up.
In front of me the thick black smoke cleared as if blown by a gust of wind. A man stepped out looking down at me. It wasnt what he was wearing, which was only jeans and a thin shirt. It was giant black feathered wings behind him. They took up almost the entire length of the hall. The fire shined against his black as night feathers.
He bent down to one knee and touched my wild curly hair. You're safe. A voice rang in my head, but his mouth hadn't moved. For some strange reason it didnt frighten me, it gave me hope.
The man helped me up to my feet. His wings folded around my body and his flexed arms held my small body up right. Suddenly I felt cool. My lungs felt clean and my body wasn't on fire. I looked into his eyes, expecting them to be as dark as the feathers from his back, but they were a soft green, emerald.
He did not smile or look at me as he walked me through the house. I saw smoke leap under and around our feet. I still smelt the fire and burning wood that surrounded us, but it didnt fill my lungs.
I couldn't tell which way were were heading but I knew I was dead, and I excepted death like a friend.
Sirens rang loudly. Blue, red and white lights flashed through the feathers of the stranger. Crisp air filled my lungs as goose bumps rose on my skin. We were outside. I was cold.
The black winged angel faced me. His bright green eyes grew dark as he leaned in and kissed my forehead. The voice echoed in my head once more, you're safe.
Then he was gone.
I heard my mother scream and saw men in yellow suits run towards me before my vision darkened and I let my body go.
