After introducing himself as James, we walked a few miles in silence. At last, we stopped for a rest. He stopped and collected some dangerous - looking mushrooms and handed me a couple. I shook my head.
"Vampires don't have to eat. We're practically immortal." He looked at he and tilted his head, swallowing a handful of the mushrooms.
"Well, you're not considering you can get killed." I nodded and grit my teeth. "Yes we can."
~~~
We lie awake in the night, staring up at the small patch of stars we could see above us. James points out a part of Alpha, a wolf constellation. I shrug and say I don't see it. I just see stars.Neither of us wanted to take first watch. I didn't fully trust James yet. He didn't trust me as much as he seemed, despite him trying to hide it.
We both reach for our knives as growls surround us. James stands quickly and stands in front of me. But they were everywhere and we were trapped.
The first werewolf's eyes meet mine, and I quickly jam my weapon in its throat when it lunged. James was doing the same, even though he was slower. Then I had an idea.
I ran, faster than the speed of light. Rocks and sticks were chucked at the dangerous dogs, and I paused as I heard James yelp. In lunged at the gray wolf atop of him, wrestling it to the ground. My knife was in its chest before it knew what had happened.
Something is on top of me now, clawing at my throat. I cry out, gritting my teeth. Soon it was wrestled from the ground and with a yelp, it was gone.
I rise shakily, looking at all the animals around us. Their dead bodies were stranded every which way, and I shuddered as their lifeless eyes stared up at me.
James was still over the werewolf that attacked me, breathing heavy. I gently put a hand on his shoulder and helped him up. He gazed, awestruck, at the pack. Then his eyes meey my throat.
His eyes grow wide and I touch my throat, sending short sparks of pain everywhere. Black dots swim in front of my eyes and my knees buckle as James says something I can't make out. Then all goes black.
~~~
I slowly open my eyes. I moan as pain shoots from my neck, and I slowly take in my surroundings.Gray rock all around, except for a small opening a few yards in front of me. I was protected by a short, thick pillar of rock that stretched midway to the tall ceiling of the cave. Water dripped somewhere in a corner, and our cloaks were on the ground near a burnt out fire.
James was asleep against the wall on the opposite side of our fire, a large cut in his head. How did he get that? Surprisingly, I felt concern for the wolf. But he was my friend now. He obviously took the time to drag me to a cave and fend off werewolves with me. It didn't matter that our promise was sealed in blood.
