A short story.
Bright rays flooded her vision as she stepped outside. The day was cold yet the sun still came to dance in the sky as it always would. Within the neighborhood all the houses looked the same, a soft white with blue shingles. The picket fences matched the houses and the lawns were always mowed. The houses may have been in perfect condition, but she knew the people inside of them were not. Empty streets only carried the noise of her foot steps moving at an even pace across the sidewalk. Off to work she walked eight blocks, but decided to stop and gaze at all the animals waiting to be adopted.
"Maybe one day..." she thought to herself, although she knew now was not the time to get a dog. Having just left college to start her own career was already hard enough let alone adding a dog to the mix. Just as she was about to walk away a tall man bumped into her and she fell. He turned and helped her apologizing over and over for what he had done. "I am so sorry mam, I didn't mean to knock you over you see I am very late for work and was not paying attention"
"It's alright, I'm late too" she replied. He nodded to her and they walked together quietly and he finally asked "Where do you work?"
"Just down on Thomas Avenue, I'm a home designer for clients over at the real estate agency."
"Well that must be good work do you like it?"
"Yes I do actually it's very fun."
"How lovely, well I have to go," he winked and hurried down Railroad lane turning into the nearest coffee shop. She laughed a little to herself, dazed by the way he made her feel. Once she got to work all day she looked for his face in the crowds of people who came in looking at design prices.Although as the days past he was nowhere to be found, everyday she made a turn to go into the coffee shop he went to. And she always wondered why would he go for coffee if he was late for work, but even so she still went to wait for him.
Months past and she gave up, there weren't many young people in this town like her. He was dreadfully good looking and seemed about 25 just a year older than her. With brown hair and blue eyes just perfectly dressed in a
blue suit with black slacks. And ever since he's been gone she has tried to get him out of her head, but the truth is she didn't want him to leave. In fact all she wanted was for him to come back. It's funny how someone who was in her life for such a short time could leave such a lasting memory. His face was still vivid in her mind and he would never know just how much he meant to her.
After a couple years she acquired many friends and they all knew about this mystery guy who no one had seen except her. Coming to realize he would never come back was hard and she didn't understand why it was. He was there for a mere 5 minutes of her whole life and that was all she could think about. There must have been something wrong with her she thought over and over again. Until finally one day as she walked down the road to work and sun shone in her eyes she realized he was the sun. And he was with her everyday rising and setting because his smile was what made the sun shine.
It only took time to get over the stranger who changed her life. But, the memories they leave with you are what make them count.
