Hope Fails

The way Hope talked about her hell as we walked only made me fear this journey even more.  The path way from the hospital was narrow and the muddy sand slide as I walked. Bellow me sphinxes circled the air letting out shrieks as they dove into the flames and picked up souls. Serenity was humming a soothing tale. The words were so faint that I couldn’t make out what she was saying nor did I try to listen to closely. Feira stayed by my side and walked with me until we reached the end of the bridge that Hope said lead into the first pit of hell. When I looked back where whence I came the hospital was gone and all I saw was a rusty sky. Feira grabbed my hand and helped me walk forward into the circular pit.

The steps down were rugged and slick. I could hear laughter coming from the bottom of the pit. It was almost a festive laughter that made the journey seem not so fearsome. The closer I got to the bottom the more I noticed that the laughter was malicious and festive mixed together with screams. The screams were mangled. Hope seemed to not notice my apprehension as she jumped from the last step and walked into the pit. Shock filled me as I looked onto the unholy scene.

There in front of me stood rows of men, woman, and children attached to theses metal cages. There bodies seemed to be naked beside the some cloth that covered any inappropriate part of there bodies. Most of there arms and legs were attached to the caged with barbwire. There necks were held back so they couldn’t look down but only up at the sky. It was then that I noticed that instead of the flames coming from the ground like I had originally thought they were coming from the air itself. Every soul attached to the cages was looking up at the burning flames that hovered inches above there faces. Then there were innocent looking men, woman and child standing in front of each cage. They were covered in blood and they were laughing as they slashed and mangled the souls on the cages. I turned my head away from the scenes of violence in front of me and asked Hope;

“W-what is this? Why are these souls attacking each other? Why are these souls attacking each other? I can’t watch this! Please God get me out of here! I don’t want to hear this or see it.” Hope scoffed at the word “God”.

“This is my part of hell. This is where all those who do not express their anger and their true feeling go. When they come here they lose all sense of humanity and act only on the emotions that they’ve hid for so long. They don’t know that this is wrong they just feel the need to tear and rip. But don’t fear big sister theses souls they torture aren’t so innocent either.”

“What do you mean by that no one deserves this? There is something wrong here, can’t you see it?”

“Not even cold blooded kills? These people here have taken the life of innocent people and then hid their bodies so no one, not even the soul, can truly rest in peace.”

“Are you saying that all the people on those racks are murderers? How could you know that? Why are we here when you said that we were going to see Satan?”

“This is my hell because I may look innocent but even I am a monster hidden inside. Do you see the man right there? He is being tortured by two girls and they seem to be so happy with everything they are doing?”

I turned away from Hope to look at the man that she was pointing to. He looked like he was once a country man that worked many hours under the harsh sun. Looking past the bruises and cuts I couldn’t tell if he was a good looking man but there were some traces of handsomeness. Screams of pain escaped his lips as two young girls attacked him. Nothing about him appeared to be a monster. The only monsters that I could see were the two girls that were torturing him. Though neither of the girls looked of similar class they appeared the same in some likeness. One girl looked to be poor with dirt on her face and a hand-me-down looking dress while the other was clean with a gothic white lace dress was well fit for  her body. I looked once more at the man as he cried tears of pain before I looked away unable to withstand such cruelty.
