Chapter 3
"Paige! Paige! Paige, come quickly!" My parents called to me as I sprinted back towards the cabin. I saw crowds gathering around the Arena gates, and as I had guess there were officials gathering the wolves to put into the Arena.
My parents sprinted towards me, reaching me before the guards could reach me first.
"Sweetie, we love you. We love you, we love you, we love you. No matter how you come out of there, we love you. There is nothing you could do they would make us not love you, and there is nothing you could have ever done that would make us more proud of the woman you have become." My father rushed to get out as the guards made their way over to collect me.
My mother had tears running down her face once again, and my face was drenched as well. My fathers eyes were teary and his face was red. These were the last goodbyes, and we all knew it. They were saying goodbye to their last living child, and it was tearing them apart.
"I love you guys, I love you so much. I'll get out alive, I will. I promise you, I will fight to get out for you."
My father grabbed me and my mother in a huge hug as the guards reached us.
"Ms. Reynolds, if you would please come with us, it is time." The tall guards voice was indifferent and rehearsed. He had undoubtably seen many scenes like these through his career. The feelings no longer seeming to effect him.
His partner, however, was red faced and seemed unable to talk out of fear or breaking down. Soon enough he would harder to it all though, soon enough it would all just become protocol.
My mother, shaking, handed my my backpack all filled with supplies.
"Yes, I'm ready." And the guards proceeded to stand on either of my sides and guided me to the gates and crowd of people. My parents followed behind slowly, trying to compose themselves as much as possible.
Looking forward I observed the crowd of people, trying to pick out the ones who might be going into the hell hole with me. The girls we're easy to identify, no mate standing beside them with tears running down their face. The guys were harder to spot. No tears, no emotions whatsoever.
The men, if you really think of it, had nothing to be afraid of in this whole process. They were having their pick of attractive, appealing females. The only thing that would change in their lives would be the fact that they would come out with the woman of their choice whom they could keep forever.
The females though, would either die, find their perfect mate, escape somehow, or be forced to stay with a man who chose them. There was almost no happy ending for us.
Snapping out of my inner monologue I found myself being pushed towards the open gates of the Arena, along with the other females I had spotted earlier.
This was customary, the females always got the enter first in order to run away and hide or do whatever they wanted before the males were set loose. My game plan was to get inside and climb, climb the trees as high as possible and not touch the ground until the week in the Arena was over.
If I could limit the spread if my scent, and my appearance I would become almost invisible.
I looked back as I was pushed inside the high gates and got one last glance of my parents as they blowed kisses at me from afar. I waved my hand one last time and then my vision was blocked by the closing of the gate.
"How long do we have?" A tall redhead asked.
"We have five minutes until they set the males loose." I answered.
She looked around and found a fallen log amount the expanse of white snow. She stood up on it, gathering the attention of all the girls who hadn't automatically run.
"Girls! The men are going to be released in five minutes, and they will decide the ranks if the pack. Let's all come together and create a pack of our own! We will survive longer against the males!"
Many girls nodded and stepped closer to their leader, others walked away, and I turned looking for a tall tree to climb. I saw a high line tree that looked good to hide in while the men ran through the woods.
I started jogging over to it, ignoring the redhead who was gathering her new little group. I approached my tree and started climbing with all my might. By now, we had about two minutes, and I needed to get as high as possible.
I got about to the middle of the high tree, and hid in the crowded branches. I shifted into my wolf, which was white enough to blend with the snow.
I heard growling.
And the males were release snarling and tumbling into the Arena.
Right under my tree.
