(Y/N) sauntered out to the girls' gym in the warm Spring afternoon, her arms swinging beside her as she walked. Cicadas chirped in the grass as her feet crunched the gravel.
She looked up at the sun and raised her hand before her eyes. The heat was nice after being inside the air conditioned building. Karasuno was always a few degrees too cold for her liking. She allowed her fingers to part for the sunlight to peek through and warm her skin .
Her walk to practice was always long and lonely, so she would often stop by the boys' gym to say hello. However, (Y/N) had no time for that as she was already late to practice because of a mess she had to clean up. It wasn't her fault that her lab partner misread the directions, but she still was punished when the chemical's reaction was greater than expected. So, she was six minutes late, which meant six less minutes to get better and progress.
(Y/N) opened up the door after she slipped off her outdoor shoes. THe smell of maple wood planks and the quiet hum of the gym lights put a smile on her face as she stepped inside. Just like that, (Y/N) forgot about her stupid lab partner and annoying teacher. She was home, and practice was about to begin.
"It's about time you got here, lazy." Amane had a playful smile on her lips. "We already set everything up 'cause you were taking so long."
Amane Hiro was the closest thing (Y/N) had to a best friend. Besides her brother, though (Y/N) would argue Tooru didn't count, Amane was the only person she felt comfortable sharing everything with. She was a second year and the official setter of the team. They practiced together often, so Amane would set to (Y/N) more frequently than anyone else.
"Gomen! But at least I didn't miss any practicing, right?"
She dropped her things by the door, pulled on her knee pads and slipped on her volleyball shoes. (Y/N)'d changed into her practice clothes beforehand.
Their newly appointed captain, Kanai, emerged from the supply closet with the cart of volleyballs. "Hi, Oikawa-san!" She greeted cheerfully. Maeda was trailing behind her, pushing the back end of the cart.
"She's here?" Came a voice from the closet. Aihara poked her head out, narrowed eyes pointed at (Y/N). "You think you can just come to practice whenever you want?"
"It's not my fault!" She hurried to explain. "Ito-sensei made me stay after class!"
Aihara had a bad habit of scolding (Y/N) when it wasn't necessary. Though the rest of the team would argue that (Y/N) had bad habits of her own and Aihara was the only one who knew how to deal with her.
She straightened and heaved a heavy sigh. "I guess I can't complain. At least you're ready. Everyone else is still dressing out."
(Y/N) felt herself smile. It'd been a long time since the whole team was together to practice. Many of the girls had conflicts, or were just too lazy to show up. Often times, (Y/N) would go in the gym and find only the third year girls and Amane ready to play, the rest of the team would be out studying, working, or on dates with their partners. It was hard to practice anything with so few people, but they had enough to do some practicing, even if it wasn't as helpful as it could be.
Kanai tied her pink hair into a low bun. "I don't want to start without them, but we've already been waiting a long time."
"They'll be fine." Said Amane with a dismissive wave of her hand. "We can start with hitting lines. I'll set to you."
As they began to practice, the rest of the girls filed in. First came Matsuoka Keiko. She was a first year like (Y/N) and a setter. (Y/N) thought she had potential to be one of the best setters she'd known, but Matsuoka lacked all confidence in herself and often held back. That's why Amane was always in instead.
