"Oikawa-san, are you sure you don't want us to wait with you?" Kanai asked for the third time.
The team arrived back at Karasuno late on Friday night and the majority of girls had already scampered off for a chance of fitful sleep. However, Kanai and Amane strayed behind to lock up until (Y/N) offered to do it for them. Despite (Y/N) having locked up before, the upperclassmen were wary of leaving her alone so late at night.
"Yeah, we can help you and then you won't have to walk home all alone, either." Amane reasoned. "You can just sleep over, if you want."
"It's okay~" (Y/N) assured them with a cheerful smile. The keys jingled in her fingers as she waved her hand dismissively. "Tooru is just around the corner, so I won't be alone long, anyway."
The two girls eyed her for a moment, and Amane was the first to break. "Well, alright, if you promise you'll be fine."
"Cross my heart,"
Kanai smiled fondly, but before she could speak, a yawn passed her lips. "I guess we should get going," She chuckled. "Text us when you get home, okay?"
"Okay, be safe!"
The two girls turned around and started their walk home, leaving (Y/N) to herself. As soon as the pair rounded the corner, (Y/N) had no need to maintain her facade and allowed her smile to slip away. She tucked her hands deep into her pockets and stalked towards the gym with nothing but the chirping crickets to keep her company.
Her fatigue made the doors heavier than they actually were, and despite having ample practice with setting the net up on her own, it was a bit more difficult after a lost game. She managed to set up as well as she could and pulled the faithful cart of volleyballs to the serving line. (Y/N) didn't waste any more time before grabbing a ball.
She knew her pent up rage and excessive disappointment would do nothing to help her serve better. (Y/N) told herself to inhale deeply, then breathe out all of her unchecked emotions. There was no time for such trivial things when the Spring Tournament was just around the corner, and (Y/N) couldn't even get a serve over the net.
How stupid.
She tossed the ball up and jumped after it, hitting the ball with the help of her smothered anger she tried so desperately to ignore. (Y/N) landed on the ground, pleased to see she wasn't completely helpless when it came to serving over the net, but her aim was like a beginners.
"Come on," She urged herself angrily, reaching for another ball. She needed to fix her serve, or she'd be letting everyone down.
(Y/N) stayed at the serving line until she emptied the cart, then, without a water break, she gathered up all the balls and put them back in place to begin all over again. All reason escaped her and all she could bring herself to care about was how messy she was, and how she knew better. She was playing like a child and nothing frustrated her more.
She'd almost finished her second set of serves when the gym door slid open. Her hand slammed into the ball, sending it flying to the other side of the court, only to land with a loud slam! on the ground.
"Ah, there you are."
(Y/N) was hunched over herself, supporting her weight with her hands on her knees as she turned to see her brother in the doorway. Her throat burned from dryness and her chest hurt from over exertion. Still, she tried to catch her breath as she reached for another ball. "Hey," She said simply.
Tooru's eyes looked over the gym in disappointment. Volleyballs littered the floor and by (Y/N)'s state, he could tell it was all her doing. "How many times have you--?"
