After a good practice Wednesday—one everyone showed up to!—Kanai spoke to the girls about the spring tournament. She said something along the lines of nationals meaning a lot to her as a third year and that a fair few team members were putting in work the rest simply weren't. After a light scolding, and Kanai apologizing right after for being rude, the girls on the team were rejuvenated and ready to work. (Y/N) doubted the surge would last long, but it came at a good time. They could get a fair amount of practice in before their match that Friday.
On Thursday, practice was interrupted by their ghost of an advisor. It was the first time she showed up in ages, and she only had bad news. (Y/N)'s teacher complained about her lack of work ethic and those in charge of discipline decided (Y/N) couldn't participate in club activities until she turned in her missing assignments.
Aihara yelled at (Y/N) for her laziness and Kanai promptly sent her home to work. At the time, it seemed like Kanai was helping her, but the more she stared at the work in front of her, it felt more like a punishment. (Y/N) even began to wonder if her club advisor waited until Thursday night just to spite her.
It was late that same night when (Y/N) and Tooru sat up at the dining room table. Notebooks and scrap paper littered the surface and the plate of snacks their mom made them before bed was picked clean. (Y/N)'s eyes were heavy from exhaustion and even her brother hunched over the table despite the many times their parents scolded him for bad posture.
"You're overthinking it, (Y/N)-chan." Even though he was tired, Tooru's voice was still gentle and patient.
(Y/N) on the other hand, skipped out on the patience offered in the gene pool. "This is stupid!" She decided. "All I have to do is turn everything in, it doesn't have to be right."
"That's no way to look at it," Tooru slid the paper over to him and took her pencil. "Here, the questions aren't as difficult as you're making them. It's like this,"
(Y/N) watched intently as Tooru explained the formula for interest rates. He pulled out what number stood for which variable and wrote them off to the side. "It helps later if you have the variables written so you can look back." He told her. Then, he set up the equation, making it look as easy as basic addition, and slid the paper back to her. "Now, solve."
(Y/N) plugged the equation into her calculator and got an answer that looked to be correct. Instead of being excited or amazed, she gave Tooru a questioning look. "Okay, but how do you know what numbers match up with the variables?"
Tooru's brown eyes widened in disbelief and (Y/N) took notice of the slight annoyance on his face. "We've been over this so many times!"
"Yeah; I don't get it!" (Y/N) was tired and frustrated, which made her prone to raising her voice. "I have a match tomorrow and I'm not missing it! You have to help me!"
Tooru was just as tired as she was, especially after a full practice. He didn't have to do anything, and both of them knew it. "Maybe you should've done your assignments on time. You're lucky you're allowed to turn them in at all."
(Y/N) knew he was right, but it didn't make it any better to hear. She pouted, looking over the notes scribbled all around her worksheet. Without a word, she began setting up the next problem the best that she could.
Tooru smiled teasingly. "Change of heart?"
"Shut up,"
Once she finished setting up the equation, she passed it to Tooru. "Like this?"
"Almost," He took her pencil once more and (Y/N) groaned in agitation. Tooru rolled his eyes. "It's not that bad. You just forgot your negative."
Her face brightened. "Really?"
