I am so sorry I was gone for so long
- - -

(Y/N) woke to the smell of breakfast cooking downstairs, sunlight spilling in through the curtains, and her phone ringing loud enough to wake half of the neighborhood. Her legs were sore from such a good practice the night before and her eyelids were too heavy. Still, she felt around her nightstand until she found her phone and answered without looking to see who called.

"Hello?"

"Get up," It was Kageyama. Unlike (Y/N), he sounded perfectly rested, and already slightly annoyed. "I'm outside your house."

(Y/N) sat up, rubbing her tired eyes. She was still so out of it, she had to take a moment to process what he said. When it finally clicked, she felt herself frown "Outside?" She repeated through a yawn. "What for?"

"Practice. Hurry up or we'll be late."

He hung up before she could respond. Leave it to Kageyama to still keep all of his charm, even in the early hours of the morning.

(Y/N) pulled herself out of bed, threw on a t-shirt and a pair of running shorts, and tossed her sports bag over her shoulder. She was quick to brush her teeth and make her hair a bit more presentable before she went downstairs to grab a water bottle from the kitchen cabinets.

"Where are you off to so early?" Her mother looked up from that morning's paper. She always liked to read the comics, but she typically skipped over everything else. "Practice again?"

(Y/N) nodded as she filled up her water bottle. "It's with the boys though. I might be gone all day."

"Be careful not to overwork yourself, (Y/N)." Her father said. "I'll pack you something to eat when you get a break."

Just as he said so, her phone started to ring again. Kageyama was particularly impatient that morning. (Y/N) knew that was her cue to hurry up.

"It's okay, I'll pick something up on the way. Thanks, though," She rushed out of the kitchen, slipped on her shoes, and was stumbling out the front door by the time Kageyama was sent to voicemail.

"'Morning!" She jogged to his side as she tucked her drink into her bag. "Sorry I overslept. I was up too late last night."

"Are you good to practice?" Kageyama asked.

"Oh, yeah, of course." She was quick to say. "More than good."

The morning's air was cool and calm. Not too many people were out yet, so as they walked, (Y/N) pretended like she and Kageyama were the only two in the whole town. They could go wherever they wanted and do whatever they liked without anyone coming to bother them. She peered at him from the corner of her eye, but he didn't notice. He was staring ahead, thinking about something, but she didn't have the slightest clue what.

"Hey," He looked over to her when she spoke. "How did you know I was sleeping, still?"

He was quick to look at his shoes. "You always sleep in on weekends. It's why we're always late."

"Yeah, I guess you're right." She smiled. "I should've set an alarm, or something. I didn't even get to eat breakfast."

"Oh, um..." Kageyama dug through his bag, refusing to meet (Y/N)'s eyes. "Mom made me bring you this."

He passed along a rice ball still safely wrapped in convenience store packaging. As soon as it was in her hand, (Y/N) began to unwrap it and dig in.

"Did you get them last night?"

"Um," Kageyama mumbled. "Yeah. I ate mine waiting for you."

(Y/N) gave a hum of understanding. "Tell her I said thanks,"
