MAYA'S POV:
The wooziness faded slowly.
The next thing I knew, my body was resting on Lucas' warm chest as he carried me up the stairs to my dorm.
He obliged to my request.
Smart guy.
"Where's... um... Riley?" I mumble against the warmth of his gray muscle tee. The body heat radiating off of him warmed me like a heater, allowing me to snuggle up closer to his chest. I could hear his heart beat clearly, thudding through his chest.
Boom. Boom. Boom.
Hope.
"I... I don't know," he stutters hesitantly as if the answer did not come naturally. It was easy to tell he was truly not sure of his answer and was not focused on the topic anyway.
My eyes flutter up slowly. "W—What?"
Lucas ignores my second question as he shoves the dorm key into the slot and pushes the door open, trudging himself and me through it. Immediately, he rushes over to my bed and gently places me down.
A cold shiver rushes down my spine, causing me to flinch as his body is hovered over me.
"Maya, it's okay. It's me."
Reassurance.
That whisper. His smooth, husky voice soothed my nerves, one at a time.
Lucas hovers over me, inspecting the dried-up cut on my forehead. His hazel pupils dilate suddenly as he stares intently at it. Instincts take over, provoking me to wince at the touch of his hand.
No words. Just his eyes glance over to me, and he sees the pain and terror deep within my blue eyes.
I feel a hand touch mine, grasping it tightly.
Comfort.
Darkness settles in around the room on purpose. The world goes black. I scrunch my eyes tightly, avoiding gazing into Lucas' eyes.
"Maya..." he whispers hesitantly, "I really need to bring you to the hospital."
"No!" I shout as I attempt to sit up.
Gently, Lucas tries to push me back down. "Hey, hey. Calm down, Penelope... I—um..."
I see the hesitance in his eyes as he contemplates what to do. By bringing me, he's technically doing the right thing, but he's also breaking my trust. By not bringing me, he's not doing the right thing and risking my health, but he's listening to me and valuing my opinion.
"I—I won't bring you."
Trust.
I settle down. My brain resets. I breathe.
"But I need to get you cleaned up."
Two arms sweep under my legs, bringing my body nuzzled in his embrace. As Lucas pushes the bathroom door with one arm, I feel my bare skin against his soft, velvety shirt.
