Chapter 1

The crowd gasps. And my parents can't quite believe what they're hearing. Both of them?  As much as I feel for them, loosing both their children in one day, I know the fact that we both chose Erudite will pain them more. My father will think it's his parenting, and my mother;  this is our rebellion- against her. But; they'll carry on, say no more about it. Abnegation to the core. Something my brother and I will never, can never, be.

Chapter 2

The Abnegation initiates go to, and away from, their families. But I know what to expect, the Erudites don't believe in inter-faction ties. "Faction before blood" and all. We're led away by men in traditional Erudite clothing. I try to sneak a glance at Caleb, but to no avail. I know that I have to maintain a serene, graceful exterior; even though adreniline is coarsing through my veins. Erudite are cold and hardy in pressured situations and if I am to become one of them I need to portray myself as one of them. It's difficult, but I need to do all I can to pass the Erudite initiation test, or I am to live the rest of my life as Factionless, a wanderer, with no home.

Chapter 3

I've never seen the Erudite compound, except in broadcasts and news bulletins, and have no idea how to prepare myself for my new home, so as our van pulls into the town plaza I'm taken completly by surprise. A plethora of grey, industrialised buildings scatter the skyline, creating a stark contrast to that of the beautiful, ancient looking libraries dotted around the city.

By far the largest building is a bustling granite tower, with people coming in and out of its revolving doors. This must be the town hall. Hall, being quite an understatment.

We're ushered out of the van and through the revolving door of the town hall, into a dome roofed reception, with potted trees placed throughout the marble floor. In front of the elevators A small group of initiates is waiting, surrounded by the men that guided us from Abnegation. I see Caleb's head above the rest and attempt a wave, he makes eye contact, then looks away quickly, the steel doors of the elevator open and he is the first inside.
