CHAPTER EIGHT (sorry, I don't have bolds or italics)

"Literal testing is the term used for the test that shows us how much you actually know, how clever you are. As most of you will know intelligence and how clever you are are very different things. Further tests will be based on the intelligence side of the spectrum. The test being passed around now will be three and an half hours, you are free to discuss the answers during this time."

A wave of murmurs breaks over the room, we can discuss? All tests I took in Abnegation had to be taken in silence. I remember one time I talked to My neighbour, Alice, in a test and my teacher sent me to the principle, who then called my mother, she was so angry, I,

Your time starts, now.

Crap.

I turn the test over, and barely read the question before someone asks what it is,

'If Jeff owns x number of counters, and splits the counters evenly between his two friends, who, in turn, split them between three of their friends, write the expression out in terms of x."

Double crap.

"Guys, what's one?"

"X-3/4"

"4X x 2 x 6"

"X over 2 x 3"

I see their game, trying to trick the others into copying down the right answer. Well, I won't be falling for it, I look at the next question on the page,

"Why do we need factions?"

Come on, anyone who's studied modern history would know this, I remember me Johnson made us learn it word for word, I almost laugh as I write down,

"Factions were created to stop the outbreak of war that plagued our barren country before without factions, humans can not co-exist."

"2 anyone?"

"To fight racism,"

"To stop disease,"

"War,"

At least one person is trying to help, I won't be seeing them tomorrow.

'What necessity does Amity bring to our society'

I know this one too, dad told us once at the table that the Amity farms were suffering from a malfunction in the pseudo-atmosphere, causing a drought.

The next few questions are easy and I breeze through to the last question along with the question hollering crowd,

'What is Divergence?'

My heart skips a beat, what can I do? Tori told me that Divergence was a very dangerous thing but was it worth sacrificing five marks to imply my innocence? I think for another couple of minutes and compromise by writing down a simple sentence.

"A difference of path."

A dozen answers circulate the room before I raise my hand, signalling my completion of the task. My paper is collected in and I've done all I can do. I stand up, push in my chair and leave the room.
