As I expected, my happiness was short lived. As Garnet became serious, my tears vanished. She cleared her throat and the room went silent.
"Gems. We have a mission. There's something causing immediate danger to the human race, and it must be taken care of as soon as possible." The gems all straightened up. Steven did too. I looked at him. He couldn't be planning on going, could he? My question was quickly answered by none other than Steven.
"I'm going too. I am a Crystal Gem, have been for quite a while now. I'm going with you, no matter what anyone says." My tears returned, but this time for a different reason. He couldn't go. Not when we had just found out.
"Steven, please." He looked at me with a sad look in his eyes. He walked over and grabbed my hand. Pulling me out if the room, we went upstairs to our bedroom. I sat on the bed, and he seemed suddenly anxious.
"I'm so sorry Connie. But I really don't see them having a successful mission without my help." He sat beside me and wiped the tear rolling down my cheek.
"What if you get hurt? What would happen to you? I don't want you leaving me. Not to mention the baby." He put on a sad smile and my tears came faster. He gave me a small kiss and answered me.
"I'm sure I'll be fine. But in case something bad does happen, I'm sure you'll be alright while the gems try to find a way to heal me." I nodded, my tears flowing freely. At this point, I was choking back sobs. He kissed me again, then stood. He went to the door, gave me a sad look before leaving the room. He shut the door behind him, and I broke down. Sobs racking my body, it was about 30 minutes until I was finally able to calm down.
I went downstairs, and the gems had stayed so I could say goodbye to the and Steven. I hugged each of the gems individually, and I gave Steven a long, passionate kiss. He pulled back and smiled, picking up the 'be safe' and 'I love you' in the kiss. I gave him a hug, and watched with silent tears streaming down my face as they left.
I felt a hand on my shoulder, and I turned around to see my mom. She looked at me sympathetically, and I hugged her, dissolving into a mess of sobs.
"Honey, he's been going on these missions since before you two met. I'm sure he'll be fine." I wiped the tears off of my face and nodded.
"I know. But he's never been on one this dangerous. If it wasn't critical, Garnet wouldn't have interrupted such a happy and important occasion." I managed to choke the words out, but they sounded high and pitiful and broken. I hated that I sounded so torn up about this. I was going to be a mother. I should be strong about this kind of thing.
"I still believe he will turn out ok. By the way, this kind of emotion is typical in pregnancy." She smiled and kissed my hair. I smiled as well. She knew me so well. She had practically read my mind.
"Will you guys stay with me until the gems get back? I don't want to be alone with my thoughts." I asked as I sat down on the couch. My mom joined me and ran a thumb over my hand. I smiled as she nodded. My dad and father-in-law soon joined us and we turned on the TV, biding the time until the gems returned.
A few hours later, it was around 11:30 at night. I suddenly heard my phone ring, and I anxiously grabbed it. I closed my eyes and hoped for it not to be what I thought it was. As I looked at the screen and saw Steven's number, tears sprang to my eyes, my worst fears confirming themselves in my mind. I answered, voice and hands shaking.
"Steven?"
"Connie?" His voice was so weak. He had been hurt. A sob escaped me. My world, the love of my life, the father of my unborn child, had been hurt. And it was bad enough to call me "Connie, listen to me. This is important. Are you listening?" I felt more tears escape my eyes and I went quiet.
"Yes." I whispered.
"Connie, I've been hurt. I'm not sure how bad it is yet. But I know I'll be fine. Connie, promise me you will go on without my help for a while. The baby needs you. I need you to promise me." A small sob escaped me. My mom looked at me, sensing the situation. My father-in-law covered his mouth, and walked out of the room with silent tears streaming down his face.
"But Ste-"
"Baby, promise me."
"I promise."
"Thank you. I love you. Don't ever forget that. I will fight to get better for you and the baby." I whispered an I love you too into the phone before he hung up. As soon as the line was disconnected, the tears flowed freely, and I was sobbing so hard I was shaking. My mom attempted to wrap her arms around me, but I pushed her away. She looked at me, a hurt expression on her face, which was quickly replaced with one of pity and understanding.
"I have to go. I have to get to him. He's at the temple. I know it. Can you please give me a ride?" I yelled, my voice cracking and wavering. My dad nodded, and we ran out to their car. Greg got in with us too, and we sped off towards the temple. As soon as we arrived, I ran into the house and saw Steven lying on his old bed. I ran up to him. He had a large bandage wrapped around his torso, as well as one on his right arm, just below his elbow. Both were blood soaked, and as I saw this, I dissolved into sobs again. I crawled onto the bed next to him, and gently laid my head on his chest. He smiled weakly and put his uninjured arm around me. He whispered weakly.
"Connie. I love you so so much. Please, stay strong. No matter what." He closed his eyes and hugged me tight with his arm that was wrapped around me.
The sobs hit me in a hard wave, racking my body. I shook as Steven laid there, bleeding, and his arm wrapped around me, hugging me close.
"I love you too, Steven." I whispered. I started drifting off to sleep, and the last thing I saw before I fell into a dreamless, restless sleep, was the gems gathering around us, tear streaked faces showing obvious signs of pity.
What was going to happen to my Steven? What was going to happen to the only man I've ever loved?
