The First Practice

John's P.O.V

I watch Alexander pace around the room, running his hands through his hair.

"Alex baby, what's wrong", I ask.

"Today is my first debate team meeting, which means that I'm going to have to be in the same room with Burr. Even worse, I'm going to talk to him", he says quickly.

"Try not to punch him. I think he's already pissed enough that I pushed him into the wall" I say.

"I couldn't care less whether he's pissed or not. That's not my problem. I'm just worried for the sake of the team. How are we supposed to have a productive meeting, if Burr is an ass the entire time?", he says. I noticed he has developed dark bags under his eyes.

"Please don't worry to much. It's not healthy", I say. He smiles.

"I won't", he reassures.

Alex's P.O.V

I'm totally worrying. What if Burr and I get into a fight? What if I get in trouble with Washington?

I'm so deep in my thoughts that I don't hear John calling my name until touches my shoulder.

"Sorry, I got sidetracked", I apologize.

"I was trying to tell you that Angie invited all of us to a bar tonight", he repeats.

"Good, because after today's meeting, I might need a drink.

I look at my phone's clock.

"Shit, I'm gonna be late. I gotta go", I say. I kiss his cheek and hurry out the door.

******************************

I get to Washington's class right in time. Everyone is already there.

Great. My first meeting and I'm late. Way to make a good first impression, Alex.

"Ah, here you are. We were just about to begin", says Washington. I slide into a seat next to Maria, slightly embarrassed.

"As I was saying, I welcome you all to the 2016-2017 Columbia University Speech and Debate team. Since there aren't that many of us, let's go around and introduce ourselves", says Washington.

We all took turns saying our name and year.

"And these are your team captains", he says gesturing to Burr and I. I waved, and Burr just nods.

The kid who introduced himself as Charles Lee raised his hand.

"Don't you think it's kind of unfair for someone who has never been apart of a debate team before to become the team captain", he says snidely, glaring in my direction.

"It's not unfair if he is one out of the two people who applied for the position. He also had one of the best written essays I have ever read. If you would like to be in the running for captain next year, then I suggest you say so, and I might consider it. If that's a problem, there's the door. You can walk out anytime you would like", says Washington. Charles Lee doesn't say anything else after that.

"Anyone else have anything they feel needs to be shared?", asked Washington.

No reply.

"Ok then.

"Good", he says nodding. "I apologize but I must cut this meeting short. I have a date- I mean......... meeting, and I don't want to be late", he says, chuckling nervously.

We pack up our belongings and I turn to Maria. She's hurriedly packing up her stuff. She drops a book in her attempt to leave.

"Why the rush?", I ask her. I pick up the book for her.
