"What have you got next?" Kidd asked leaning over his desk to look at my class schedule.
"Hmm, outdoor ed - you?" I wondered while tucking my schedule away in my pocket.
"Metal works," he replied squinting at the tiny piece of paper.
"Hehe, do you need a bigger schedule Kidd?" I laughed leaning back in my chair while we waited for the bell to ring.
"Only all the time," Kidd huffed and crumpled the paper up before shoving it in his jacket pocket.
"Um, where is -"
"Outdoor ed is on the way to my class, I'll walk you," Kidd cut me off then hesitated. "Sorry, didn't mean to cut in."
"That's okay," I grinned and watched as Perona continued to scold Sam. "Poor guy."
"Pfft, who cares," Kidd grunted glancing at me.
"Mmm, not you obviously," I replied laughing. The bell rang and we stood up, sliding out backpacks on.
Kidd laughed and led me down the hallway. We chatted as he directed me to a double door that led outside. A few kids wondered outside and Kidd waved me to it.
"Just follow the guys who've walked out there, the outdoor ed class is outside," Kidd explained and headed for the nearest stairs.
I went to the door but stopped before going out. Law stood beside me, glancing down at me with uncaring eyes. I grinned at him but he ignored me and walked past.
"Oh, right," I mumbled embarrassed. "We had a fight or something."
I followed him and a few others across a field and to the edge of a forest. I hadn't even realised there was a forest here. Let alone a field.
I really need to take a day and have a tour, damn.
At the edge of the forest a group of around 20 teenagers sat in the grass while a tall round man in dungarees was handing out gas cookers. Law sat down on the grass next to a boy there, and I quickly plopped down next to him.
"You two can be a pair," the teacher said handing me and Law a gas cooker as he went on his round.
"What are you doing?" Law asked under his breath. The teacher began his lesson on how to set up a gas cooker, and health hazards to do with them.
"I want to know why you paid attention to me," I told him as I started to set up the cooker.
"What if I found you pretty," Law asked narrowing his eyes at me.
"Ha! You're not that shallow," I replied clicking the top of the cooker into place.
"You don't know that," Law replied picking a lighter from his pocket.
"Yeah, I do, because there are a lot of girls here who are prettier than me," I rolled my eyes.
Law turned the nozzle on the cooker and started up his lighter, lighting up a red flame on the cooker. He fiddled with it for a minute and the flame turned blue.
"Well you're not wrong," Law commented and I whacked him on the shoulder.
"Tell me why you were... investigating me," I said, picking the word carefully. Law snickered.
"Investigating huh?" He mused and looked me in the eyes. He didn't look defeated, but rather curious. "It's because of who your brother is."
I frowned in confusion. "What brother?"
"Your older brother? Edward Teach?" Law replied. "Who else?"
"I don't - I didn't know -" I sat back as Law turned the cooker off. "I have a brother?"
"You actually didn't know?" Law asked, almost taken aback.
"No - I've only ever been at an orphanage and under the care of foster families," I admitted. "I'd never heard about a brother?"
"He's quite a few years older than you, I think he was fourteen when your were born," Law told me. "At lunch I can show you the information in your folder if you want. He went to this school, I suppose that's why his file is here still."
"I'd really appreciate th-" I was interrupted as the teacher clapped his hands.
"Alright class! That's enough of that! As you know it's nearly time for our annual hike!" He announced cheerfully. "We have a location, a time, and a date - all we need is to prepare, pack, and proceed. The three P's."
This received a snicker from some around the class.
"So if you'd like to go, all you need to do is inform your homeroom teacher, and take this list of items," he began handing out slips of paper. "If you don't have something that's on here, you can go to the supply room and rent it out. Be sure to wash it before and after you use it."
"Are you going to go?" Law asked skimming the supply sheet.
"Dunno, maybe. What 'bout you?" I packed up the gas cooker as glass drew near it's end.
"Yes, it's good experience, and I enjoy being able to get away from this school," Law replied folding his sheet.
"Wait we get to leave school grounds?"
"Of course, we also stop at some places on the way, but obviously we're under strict supervision," he explained.
"Hang on, there are actually real life days that we get to leave the school grounds?" I clarified, shocked.
"Yes," Law laughed. "For this, for a few select field trips - and we have a yearly sports competition with another school like ours, it rotates on who goes to whose school. This year they're coming to ours, next year we go to theirs."
"Oh my god," I stared at him with my jaw dropped. "You're not kidding are you!"
"You're so astounded by the fact that I'm not kidding, aren't you?"
"Yes, but only because I'm catty," I replied teasingly.
