Your POV

Sand bristled against my teal tail, tickling it. I loved how the sand felt on my scales, especially when it was warm, like it was today. I smiled, skimming my fingers across it's surface.

I slowly drifted to the bottom, laying in it. It felt like silk at how eroded it was. I dug my fingers into the sand, burying my body into it as well. I could feel small shells scrape against my skin, but I didn't care. I closed my eyes, letting myself drift into my mind.

I hated digging into my brain. It pained me to think of everything that was happening to me. My mother just recently dying, my father hitting me. I could feel myself grimace at the thought. He wanted me gone, just like her. He was trying to sell me off to the prince of Luna Lagoon. And he knew how the prince treated me. Around everyone he was nice and flirty to me, then when we were alone, he would get mad and/or lustful. I couldn't take it anymore. My tail and arms were all bruised up from the prince, Alexander, and my father.

Just as I was about to think of something, a shadow fell over me. I peered my eyes open, and to my horror, I found a boat floating above me. Yes, a boat. The kind that I was taught to never, ever touch. But still, the curiosity stirred in my chest. My fin didn't start to move to propel me away from the danger. Instead, it stayed still.

The sound of a bell rang through the water. I narrowed my eyesat the boat, thinking or what to do. My mother taught me to never be a siren but now that she was gone, she couldn't control me. And what if I avenged her death? Wouldn't she be proud? She always said I had an amazing singing voice, it moving through the water like how a shark glides. Scary yet beautiful.

I flicked my tail, coming to the surface, slowly but surely. Just one song. One song to get my sorrow out. Then I would be okay once again.

As soon I was right below the boat, I brushed my fingers against it's shell. How slick it felt in the water, the shiny white coat of what they called paint covering it. At the back end of it, a propeller started to slow down, bubbles slowly coming to a stop.

What song to do?

I opened my mouth, an old lullaby my mother would sing to me about to come out, but there was suddenly a splash and a roar of laughter from the deck above. I looked to see what caused the splash.

There floating in the water was a human, his eyes closed. His short, pink hair floated around like a halo above his head. His tall, muscular figure giving him the perfect look, even to us mermaids. I could see his light pink lips from where I was at. But I couldn't see his eye color. He wore a white T-shirt and black slacks, his feet bare. But this was the first time I've seen feet. His toes looked alien like, freaking me out a bit.

I slowly crept toward him, afraid any movement would set him off. But all he did was float there. This concerned me a bit. I kept coming towards him until I was at the edge of the boat. What if the other humans saw me if I grabbed him? Would they harpoon me like they did to my mother? But as I kept looking at the guy, his face was starting to become blue. I sighed, knowing I needed to save him.

Taking a deep breath, I bolted out into the open, grabbed the guy by the back of his shirt, and pulled him under the boat. No screams, no commotion. They didn't see me. Good.

Doing the only thing I could think of, I pressed my lips against his and breathed into him. This would work. It usually did.

After a few huffs of breath, his eyes started to open. It revealed them to be a soft brown color, like the color of chocolate, or what I thought what chocolate. All I usually saw was the wrapper floating around the ocean with a picture of it on it.

The guy pushed me away, breathing heavily. But he wasn't breathing air. It was water.
