Secret Place!

Psalm 91:1-16

Psalm 91:11-"For He will give His angels charge of you..." This, of course, is not the first verse, but is the trusting assurance we receive throughout this chapter from our SOVEREIGN GOD! There is no specific author known for this Psalm; yet, it is the most astounding story of the Followers of God in David's day as it is for Christians today! This Psalm is divided into four parts: confidence in verses 1&2; fearing no evil in verses 3-8; present protection from God in verses 9-13; and, protection for the future believers and events in verses 14-16. This Psalm paints four pictures for the believers who put their trust in God:

1. The secret place where they may hide;

2. A shade from the scorching Heat;

3. A refuge in time of threatening troubles; and,

4. A fortress against destruction.

We begin with verse one, (NKJV)-"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the Shadow of the Almighty." God is a personal God! He speaks to you personally with a tremendous assurance of His powerful care given by a Loving Heavenly Father! (Psalm 142:5-"I cried out to You, O Lord: I said, ' You are my Refuge, my Portion in the land of the living."; 27:5-"For in time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; in the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock."; 31:20-"You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues."; 32:7-"You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.")

Those who dwell in the secret place are in the place of true safety and refuge in the Lord Jesus Christ. We need this hiding place from circumstances of life as we face many events which we cannot control. Jesus is our Refuge, our Protector and our Shelter during all storms. (Psalm 46:1-"God is our Refuge and Strength, a very Present Help in trouble."; 107:31-"Oh that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!"; Jeremiah 29:12&13-"Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart."). That is the secret to His secret place. Search for Him with all your heart!

We must dwell and abide in God's presence. Many people were hidden by friends during the holocaust to save them from death or abuse! How much more does our God protect us in a world of sin, violence, hatred, and life-threatening occurrences. We have a hiding place, a refuge in the shadow of His wings. (John 15:4-"Abide in Me and I in you..."; Psalm 18:2-"The Lord is my Rock and my Fortress and my Deliverer; My God, my Strength, in Him will I trust; my Shield and the Horn of my Salvation, my Stronghold."; and Isaiah 32:1&2.)

Deliverance from "the snare of the fowler ". The fowler used a trap to catch birds by snaring them. We as Christians are sometimes subject to snares laid by Satan or his human assistants. We can be delivered by God from the traps through God's power. God is not to be compared to the snares Satan conceives; for God is greater and more powerful than any snare of Satan. Pestilence and no type of disease can arise which He cannot overpower!

The things He protects us from are listed in verses 3-7 with our solutions from God's Word:

1. Snares-(Psalm 124:7&8-"Our soul has escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped. Our Help is in the Name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.")

2. Pestilence-(Job 5:19-"He shall deliver you in six troubles, yes in seven no evil shall touch you.")

3. Terror-(Psalm 90:5-"You shall not be afraid of the terror by night...")
