Psalm 93:1-5
Psalm 93 is a very short but is Royal in every aspect. The first two verses establish the reign of God as King of creation. Verses 3&4 celebrate the stability of God as King of Creation. The fifth verse acknowledges the excellent nature of God. (As if God needed us to decide on His stability and nature or His creation; but the fact is our acknowledgement is a must. We must recognize God for Who He is! Then we are able to begin to understand all He is and has done. He is Greater than any other man-made god!
A thought from Out Of The Depths, is important here. It suggests that some think Israel's worship was profoundly influenced by the surrounding cultures, Mesopotamia and Canaan; but it is strongly doubtful that this scripture was inspired by these influences. "These Psalms are explicit in saying, Yehweh's throne is established from of old, His kingdom is from everlasting." (Page 136-137)
We begin by a profound announcement, "The Lord Reigns,". This is the most powerful statement we can make. Praise of the highest is exuberantly proclaimed. God is the King of the Universe! He is robed majestically! He is robed in (TEV) "coverings of strength." Garments of victory! (Read Psalm 65:6-(NKJV)-"who established the mountains by His strength, being clothed with power,"; 96:10; and Isaiah 40:5-" The Glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the Lord has spoken." ). He sets up the world and it cannot be moved. There is no force that can pull this power out of God's hands.
Let's consider the eternal power of His Royal Position. "Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting,". His rule is from antiquity . All other gods were presented later. (In Numbers 23:7 we read of Balaam being paid to give a false prophecy for Balak; but he could not because God forbid it. He could not curse Israel as God prevented him with a donkey and an angel. Note that God's power covers heaven and earth. How much more does He help us walk in His way. (TLB)-"O Lord, You have reigned from prehistoric times, from the everlasting past." (CEB)-"You are eternal!" (Read Isaiah 1:1,5).
Now the Psalmist treats us to a Sea Story! The local cults believed Baal was supposed to be victorious over the waters; but this section is necessary to show God is the power in control, not Baal! (TLB)-"The mighty ocean thunders Your praise. You are mightier than all the breakers pounding on the seashores of the world." (TEV)-" The ocean depths raise their voice, Lord; they raise their voice and roar. The Lord rules supreme in heaven, greater than the roar of the ocean, more powerful than the waves of the sea." It makes you want to shout, "Hallelujah, praise God!"
If you have ever been to the ocean and heard the waves crash on the Rocky Coast of Maine, you can appreciate the volume of this sound and the power it presented as it crashed on the rocks along the coast. Then it sucked all the top soil and debris from the area on and around the rocks; only to repeat the process with crashing thunderous volume. But God is Greater! HE IS SOVEREIGN GOD! (Perhaps we need the power of God to suck the debris out of our life and purify it with the washing of Jesus' blood to cleanse us! Try it, you'll like it!)
Verse 5 sums up the anthem with a glorious pronouncement, (TLB)-"Your royal decrees cannot be changed. Holiness is forever the keynote of Your Reign."; CEB has a rather interesting version for translation of this verse-"Your laws are so faithful. Holiness decorates Your house, Lord for all time."; and (TEV)-"Your laws are eternal, Lord and Your temple is holy indeed, forever and ever."
When it comes to Interior Decorating, we could take an example from God's Household Adornment and let Holiness be our interior decoration. Interior Decorating must come before the exterior reveals the decorative results!
So I will close this chapter by saying:
1. "God is King of Creation;
2. God is King over Israel;
3. Jesus is our Savior and Coming King;
4. Our Lord Reigns and He is SOVEREIGN GOD
5. His kingdom is permanent forever and forever!
Next time...
