The rest the of the day went by fast and easy. I steered clear as far from Derek as I could. My Mom and Uncle David packed all the stuff away and Derek did the same in my room. I wanted to supervise his every move in that room to make sure he stayed away from all my stuff but I really wasn't gonna stand there and take his snarky comebacks.

Instead I sat outside for hours lying on the grass in the back yard, thinking of everything in my life. Being on my own always made me think of my Dad. Ever since he died three years ago my Mom has never been able to forgive herself and carry on with her life. It hit me hard when he died, I'd cry my self to sleep every night, But my Mom has never been the same since. No matter what anyone says to her, if you even mention his name she breaks down. I guess that's just emotion of losing the one you love.

Being out here made everything kind of disappear. It was the closest thing i had to paradise now that my Summer getaway had been ruined.

"Tyla, dinner's ready!" My Mom says from across the yard, pulling me out of my thoughts. I pick up my phone, slide it into my pocket, and make my way inside the house.

Everyone is already sat down in the dining room. Jamie sat next to my Mom, and Uncle David at the head of the table and Derek where the only empty seat was... I take the seat and stop myself from looking at him.

"How nice of you to finally join us?" He whispers softly into my ear, smirking sending tingles down my spine. My game plan for this evening was as minimal conversation as possible and avoiding him as much as I could.

My Mom  went all out on dinner. I don't think  I'd ever seen so much food in my life, and it was hard to think that my Mom had made all this in only a matter of hours. I wasn't even that hungry until I  saw all that food in front of me. I literally put everything on my plate and I'm not even bothered by it. I'm hungry.

"Whoa, easy there tiger!" His voice so low he thinks I can't hear him. All I do is roll my eye at him and he laughs bringing everyone in the rooms attention to us. The room goes quiet. I clear my throat unsure of what to say, "dinner tastes great Mom." I hope that breaks the awkwardness.

"Where did you learn how to cook like this?!" Uncle David says jumping in to ease the tension.

"Thank you guys,, I'm glad you like it."

We all sit in silence. I hate dinners were all you can hear is the sound of forks scraping the plates.

"So Tyla hows school?" When ever things would get awkward, Uncle David always seemed to be the one to break the ice.

"It's really good thanks." I lie. Junior year has been both good and bad but mostly bad.

"I hope your still getting those straight A's" Yeah so do I, I honestly don't remember the last time I attended my extra classes.

"How about you Derek?" Mom asks him.

"Yeah, it's okay." He says blankly.

"Do you still play on the football team?" I take it he was good by how interested she is to hear his answer. Now I think about it he does look like a football player if you take away the whole punk thing he's got going on. He was tall and had toned muscles, not too big but defiantly noticeable.

"Nope, I quit..." He says playing with the food on his plate.

"Oh well that's a shame you were really something else out there on the field." She says disappointed.

"Yeah well it seems that you were the only person that thought that huh?" He says coldly and turns towards his Dad.

"Derek please, not now!" He shouts slamming his knife and fork against the table.

"Not now?! Then when, when Dad?!" He yells as he balls his hands into fists.

"Derek I don't want to hear it!"

"Yeah, you never do..." He replies and gets up from the table and storms out of the room without another word, slamming the door marking his dramatic exit. What got him so worked up like that? It's clearly something that's been bothering him, but what the heck is it? Once again the room goes silent. Jamie, was clever in being quite throughout dinner. I wasn't expecting things to take the turn they did. I don't want to pry on his personal issues but I do want to find out what his problem is.

"Excuse me." I know leaving the table right after he stormed out looks strange considering the fact that I don't like him. They all watch me confused as I leave the dinner table and make my way up the stairs. I take a deep breath before I open the door.

"Are you okay?" I ask him in a hushed tone to keeping him from losing it with me. Derek sat by the window against the wall.

"Why the fuck do you care?"
