"I'm so glad you and Derek are staying with us." My mom has never seemed in such a good mood before. I on the other hand couldn't be in a worse mood.
"No really, thank you Adria for letting us stay here on such short notice," Uncle David says with two large suitcases in both of his hands, "I can't thank you enough."
"Seriously David, don't mention it!"
As I open my mouth to say hello to Uncle David my eyes are instantly diverted to what just walked in on my doorstep. For a moment it was like time slowed down and everything around him was just a blur. I'm guessing this was him, Derek. This was not the "Derek" I had imagined him being, even though I called my mothers best friend "uncle" we were only ever close with him only. Derek was the complete opposite of his father. His father was always so well dressed, polite and he was clearly an intelligent man who knew his business. But Derek... he didn't even look related to his father. His hair was black, like midnight black which was pushed back with gel. The ear stretcher he had was noticeable and made me cringe. And the tattoo on his lower right arm wasn't so bad, I actually kind of liked it, but he still looked scary as hell! None of his clothes held any color everything he wore was black. I don't think there was one thing about him that didn't make me shiver. All the things running through my mind pulled me out of my trance. Crap... I hope he didn't see me staring, this sharing a room situation is already awkward enough! My idea of keeping my eyes down until he goes away failed even worse than most of my math tests. I glance to the side and realize it's just me and him stood in the hallway, how did they all move so fast?! Oh my god how the hell long was I even looking at him?
"Hey there baby girl," I look up and see Uncle David, I didn't know why but I though it was Derek thank god it wasn't...
"Hi Uncle David," I say smiling up at his tall body.
"How have you been it feels like I only saw you when you were 12 years old, running around in your Mom's heels and bras!" He says tying his best to hold back his laughter. He really did not just say that. Derek is even trying to fight the smirk on his face, I could feel the heat rushing to my cheeks making me blush. "Yeah aha." I try and smile politely and hide my embarrassment in front of my knew roommate. As he walks away Derek moves closer from across the hall and leans on the wall next to me.
"So only I don't get a 'hello'?" He lifts his head slightly so his eyes look right into mine, and everything in the room goes blurry again. He literally makes me nauseous.
"'No- I didn'-I mean, I'm- I- I wasn't trying to be rude." I should have just kept my mouth shut. That's the longest stutter I've ever heard and it came from me.
"Oh you have a stutter? That's cute." Derek's smug smirk and the look in his eyes makes me want to slap him. He knows exactly what he's doing.
"I-I do not have a stutter." His voice makes me forget how to form a proper sentence. This conversation needs to be over before I shame myself even more and the glare I attempt to give him only seems to make him more amused.
"I've been here for ten minuets? And you already hate me, huh?" At least he knows it.
"Me? Hate you? Of course I don't!" I don't care if that sounded too sarcastic he's really pissing me off. I can't wait until all this is over.
"Hello Derek!" I don't think I've ever been more happy to hear the sound of that woman's voice.
"Hi Ms. Dante. Nice to see you." What the hell?
"You've grown so much! All those tattoos and piercings! But I still see the same polite little 5-year-old with those big brown eyes" Did she just say "polite" and "Derek" in the same sentence? Now she mentions it I look at his face from the corner of my eyes to get a better look. She wasn't lying. When he wasn't scowling, his eyes were soft and gentle.
"Thank you Ms. Dante."He says smiling- surprising me.
"No please call me Ms. D or Adria" Mom takes him from the hallway and leads him up to the room we will now have to share. I don't know how tonight is going to work out but I know it isn't gonna go well.
