The wind blew through the
Frost-encrusted trees
Whispering words of winter
Telling tales of snow and ice
Chilling all it touched with its
Frozen fingers
That clawed through the air
Until it reached the very heart of everything
*
The wind blew through the
Frost-encrusted trees
Whispering words of winter
Telling tales of the lengthening night
Of the diminishing day
Of the growing darkness
That consumed all
Until it reached the very heart of everything
*
The wind blew through the
Frost-encrusted trees
Whispering words of winter
Telling tales of a hibernating earth
Where deep sleep – or slow death
Claimed all it met
Spreading fear and dread
Until it reached the very heart of everything
*
The wind blew through the
Frost-encrusted trees
Whispering words of winter
But the sun was reborn
The spell was broken
The song it did change
And now the words that were whispered
Were of warmth and of light
Telling tales of the harsh winter's thawing
