The only time that Orchid got angry at me was when I chose Zac Efron over her.

We were in high school and the movie '17 Again' was showing on the same day she asked me to go on a date with some quarterback in our school who, according to her and I quote: “has hots for me.” Whatever that meant.

Well, I had to choose between the two eventually. Some guy and Zac Efron, and it doesn’t take a genius figure out who to choose. So there I was squealing inside the movie house at every scene Zachy was at, while my best friend got angry at me for ditching the guy. Then again, I did not regret it.

“You what?!” She shouted. “I can’t believe you agreed to him Valerie!”

And this, my friends, is the second time.

After I left his mansion and brought Orchid Tiya’s famous homemade churros, I told her what happened highlighting the part of Vincent’s deal. She was not very happy about news. And that made it both of us. But sometimes you have to choose the hard decision and let go of the one you’re comfortable with.

“I had no choice Chid! It was either that or nothing at all.” I bowed my head to her ashamed of my own choice. “I can’t just let the company go to official bankruptcy. There are people who work there who have families and friends. I just can’t let them go into the streets struggling to find means to pay for their needs. They don’t deserve that Orchid. They don’t deserve me.”

I knew my cheeks were wet but no matter how hard I refused to cry, it seemed like my tears had minds of their own. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry…” I was now hugging my knees closer as I buried my face into the gap.

I felt my friend kneel beside and hugged me. She smoothed my back and softly whispered that I should stop crying.

“I feel so bad, you know. The company was the only thing I had left of her. It was always her safe zone. And now I officially gave it up to the man who’s the reason why she left me in the first place.”

“Well, we all have to make the hard decision, don’t we? I’m sure she’s proud of you Val. Wherever she may be.” Orchid said.

“I miss her so much.” I laid my head to my best friend’s shoulder.

“I know Val. I know.” I heard Chid say as I slowly drifted off to my dreams where I hoped to see my mother again.

There was one rule in my life. Stay out of love’s way thereby saving yourself from its pain and complications. And that officially gave me the title as the most cynical woman you’ll ever meet a.k.a “most likely to die alone.” Despite my best friend’s countless attempts to put me on blind dates, I never gave up my distrustful exterior. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

But this morning, I realized that I should have two moral codes to live by. One: To stay single forever and Two: To never let someone wake me up at 8- freaking-AM. Orchid pulled the blanket off my body and jumped at my bed. “Wake up! Wake up! Wakey wakey!”

“Just 5 mow miwutes.” I mumbled to my pillow.

“Oh no excuses missy. You have been the laziest person in the world for the past week. When was the last time you took a bath or fed Diego?” I heard her say as she went inside my bathroom and turned on the shower.

“I don’t know.” I said finally facing the other side but I still hugged my oversized pillow which was again pulled out from my warmth.

“What the-!” I immediately sat up and stared at Orchid who had her hands to her hips.
