A few days later....
I haven't seen or heard from Leon. He's been avoiding me like the plague, and I know this because the bastard walks by me in the halls and doesn't even look at me. Everyday a guard has come to walk me around the perimeter of the mansion, or should I say castle since it was far to big to be anything but. I suspect that Leon has requested these walks to torture me with freedom to walk outside, but never to leave the property. I'm just a pawn. Just someone to use for information. I just wish he would get on with it instead of hiding out and making me wait.
Today the guard came to my door around eight thirty after night fall ready to take me on my walk. This one was far different from all the others. For one, he wasn't muscular at all. Instead this man was as short as me, skinny, little bone mass, and his hair was messy brown like a child's. From the smile he gave when I opened the door he almost reminded me of Caleb. The memory of him leaving a pit of darkness in my stomach. The image of him looking back at me with saddened eyes. If I ever saw him again I wouldn't be able to look him in the eyes for the way I yelled.
"Good evening miss! I'm Nate. I'll be your escort around the mansion today."
Even his voice was sweet sounding and chipper like Caleb's when he speaks to our group. His young age always showing through the way he spoke and the lightness in his tone. God I missed Caleb.
"Actually could we skip the walk today. I'm not feeling well." I spoke sadly to the young boy standing before me. His red puppy eyes staring back at me adding to my guilty memory.
Truly it was a horrible lie. However the thought of spending more time with him made me feel insecure.
"The lord Leon has requested you walk every night to get enough exercise. He spoke very clearly that it was imperative humans stay active or you grow frail and weak."
That was offending. Sure it was true, but I was offended by the image of me being weak and frail just because I didn't walk one day. The idea was revolting to say the least.
"I guess that means I am unable to bail?" I questioned annoyed.
Held captive and treated like a dog. Leon truly was torturing me.
Nate shook his head no and I exited the room frustrated. He began asking all sorts of questions about humans and the way we lived before the take over. His eyes sparkled with curiosity as I explained. I began to feel bad about my previous judgment on him. Thinking his face would be nothing but a burden, he was actually very easy to talk to, and I enjoyed talking about something to get my mind off of being held hostage.
"You went to school so early in the morning to learn things like math and English?" He asked his millionth question.
"Actually we learned more then that. There were all sorts of classes that people took. I was more into things like art and theater."
"Art? Like painting?"
"Yep! Only I took airbrush, sculpting, wheel, and even acting."
"Your school must have been so fun!" He exclaimed with a huge smile.
Never before have I ever heard someone say that about school. It was true that when the vampires took over school hours were favorable. There was more time to have fun and goof off then actually sitting in a desk all day learning things I hardly thought were necessary. But now, as I walked along a large brick wall with Nate I remembered all the great parts about it. All the times with friends, all the dances we had, every time we got in trouble. School was a large step in our lives whether we wanted to admit it or not.
