Cristina's POV:
"Yang, you need to hurry up, she shouldn't be under this long!" Mark exclaims as he paces around the operating room.
"Mark, I am working as fast as I can." I say slowly as I begin another suture.
"Mark just go sit down" Callie tries to soothe him.
"I can't sit down Callie" he cries out his voice thick with pain. "Yang you have to save her" he pleads with me.
"I am trying Mark!" I shout as yet another suture doesn't hold "If you do not sit down and shut up I will kick you out of this O.R"
He sits down with his back pressed against the wall tears falling down his face. He doesn't utter another word. I turn all my attention to Lexie's open chest and try and construct a plan. The damage is extensive and none of the sutures are holding. It isn't ideal but a graft is the only option.
"Someone get me a 5x5 graft" I shout as the scrub nurse prepares it.
"Yang, she might bleed out." Callie says her hands firmly grasping the retractors.
"You don't think I know that!" I look at her seriously. "This is the only way."
She takes a moment staring into my eyes as if she doesn't trust my decision. "Okay lets do it"
The nurse hands me the graft and I set to work repairing lexie's left lung. Whoever shot her hit her good, a whole right through her lung and a bunch of arteries hit on the way. It is going to be a bitch to repair. We are looking at another 45 minutes. Except she can only be safely under for 30 more before she is looking at complications.
I am shaken from my thoughts by a loud gunshot from the O.R. across from us. Meredith. My heart beats heavily in my chest and I feel tears burn my eyes but I have to keep working so I blink them away taking a deep breath to calm myself.
"Cristina do you think..." Callie begins tears forming in her eyes.
"Callie, pull it together or find someone to replace you. I don't think Lexie Grey will appreciate you crying into her open chest cavity." I say glancing at Callie my voice eerily calm.
"Sorry I can do this" Callie says shaking her head and steeling herself up.
"That's better" I smile slightly beneath my mask as I continue to suture.
I suture as quickly as I can without messing up. If this graft doesn't hold, she is dead for sure. But on the other hand if I take my time the risk of her never waking up is higher. I finish as quickly as I possibly can and begin closing.
"Is she going to make it" Mark asks standing up abruptly.
"We will have to wait and see Mark. But if everything works as it should then yes, she should recover nicely." I say continuing to stitch you up.
"Yang, if I you weren't wearing that surgical mask I would kiss you" Mark says laughing.
"Mark, if you ever try to kiss me, I will cut you" I look at him seriously, but in my mind I feel so much happiness. I did it, I didn't let Meredith's sister die.
My thoughts are interrupted by the door loudly swinging open we all jump until we see that it is just a nurse.
"They caught the shooter, she is in custody." the nurse informs us out of breath.
"Was anyone else injured?"
"Just both Dr. Greys and Dr. Shepherd Ma'am" she replies.
"Wait Derek was shot?" Mark exclaims getting all riled up again.
