"I have to go!" Nathan shouted, standing up and rushing away. Matthew stood up and went after him, grabbing his hand.
"Wait! Why must you leave so soon? Have I done something wrong?" Matthew was frantic, this amazing person who he doesn't even know the first name of is leaving.
"No, you don't understand. It is not you, it will never be you. This was wonderful and I had an amazing time. But I'm late" Nathan turned away, pulling his hand away, along with the glove slipping off his hand. The sparkle from the glove died out as soon as his hand left the glove. Matthew stared at it, confused. Then ran after Nathan.
--
"I haven't seen the prince all night, your majesty. It must be a good sign he has had luck with that boy. " Stephanie said to the queen who smiled at her.
"I must say, he seemed like a nice boy. Let's hope he's the one for our Matthew. "
Everyone stopped when they heard shouting from the hall. Nathan ran across the ball room floor, bursting out the doors. Matthew followed soon after. He ran up the stairs.
"Stephanie, help me try to stop him. He won't give reason of leaving"
The two ran out, trying to catch up with the gold carriage that has already driven far off. Matthew paused and looked down at the glove.
"We are sending a search out for him in tomorrow. Stephanie, you and I will carry it out into the small community beyond the hills we visited the other day. That's where he said he lived. Let's hope it wasn't a lie"
-
Nathan ran has fast as he could. Mark pulled him up into the carriage. Jack had made the horses run as fast as they could.
"Dear, I lost track of time. " Nathan said looking at Mark. Mark smiled and went to assure they would make it home in time, but all that came out was a bark. Nathan's eyes widened.
"Oh no, the spell is wearing off! Jack stop!" The carriages jerked forward. Nathan pulled them outside of the carriage and they watched as the carriage turned into a pumpkin once again. Nathan turned to the other men, but wee met with his dog and horse. The mice ran off into the woods after their transformation. His blue suits glow faded into the ripped shreds of emerald fabric once more, but the glove on his hand remained. He smiled down at it, the climbed on top of his horse.
"Let's go boys. "
Mark barked up at Nathan, then ran forward, Jack speeding up as well to catch up with his dog friend. Nathan chuckled at the two. Even if they were two different animals, they understood each other. How Nathan longed for someone who understood him, who treated him like he was more. Maybe one day.
--
Nathan quickly hid the glove under the floorboards with his other materials. He changed into his normal rags he was used to. He sat on the floor, falling asleep. The first peaceful sleep has had in years. The next morning, he made his step family breakfast happily, having a spring in his step. He smiled at Lisa when she sat at the table with her children.
"Good morning!" He said as he served the breakfast. The three looked at him in confused with the sudden happiness with the useless boy. Nathan just continued to smile.
"How was the ball, did you get to meet the prince?" Nathan was curious how they would depict the night before.
"Oh, of course! I danced with him three times" Emily bragged, though Nathan knew her lie. Arthur cut in.
"I danced with him four times!"
"But.. he did dance with this mysterious man who came in. His suit was gorgeous. Better than anyone in the room" Emily said hesitantly.
"Well, he wasn't that gorgeous. But the prince seemed to think so" Arthur slumped and crossed his arms. Lisa just rolled her eyes.
"Well, there is always a chance he could throw another ball, since that boy left with a big scene" The trio laughed and ate. Nathan was humming a song mindlessly as he cleaned up the kitchen. Lisa looked up.
"Nathan, how do you know a ballroom song?"
Nathan bit his lip, but remained calm.
"If you are assuming I went, I had nothing to go in. My mother would play it on the piano when I was younger. Her favorite song" Nathan said, acting sad as he brought his mother up. Very little acting has to be brought forth. He remembered his mothers piano playing and sighed. Lisa just looked away, still skeptical about his story. There was a knock at the door, Emily got the door, grabbing the letter from a guard and slamming the door.
"Mother! The prince will be visiting this house to find the match to the glove from last night. Arthur could Marry a prince!" The two siblings just jumped up happily. Nathan smiled to himself. Maybe by chance he will be recognized as the owner of the glove. Lisa noticed Nathan's attitude when the princes visit was announced. She still had a strange feeling, and needed to try and resolve it. She left the table, sending her children out to the village store, getting them out of the house. She sent Nathan out to the barn to clean the animals. When the house was empty, she went into her husbands old office, pulling out papers that must have been twenty years old. It was documentation of his prior marriage before her. She wanted to see if the name was truly what she thought. There it was, on paper.
Sharp.
She ran upstairs to the attic, looking for any proof to support the evidence she had just found. After tripping on a loose floorboard, she glimpsed down, seeing a blue fabric.
Huh.
Nathan thinks he can double cross her. Well now she must show her power over him.
--
Nathan returned to the house, seeing Lisa standing there with the glove in her hand. He dropped the pail of water and gasped.
"What, Nathan? Or should I say N. Sharp" she smirked, walking closer with the fabric dangling in her hand. Nathan felt tears welling up in his eyes.
"You think you can double cross me? Well you are a fool. " She grabbed him by the hair, pulling him up to the attic. Nathan was crying, trying to pull away.
"Stop!"
"I think punishment is in order. I am locking you in this room until the prince leaves this place. He will take my Arthur as his heir and he will get what he deserves" Lisa said, shoving him into the room. She didn't notice that Nathan grabbed the glove away from her. She was to angry. "I will deal with you after. But know, your life will be a living hell" The attic door slammer and Nathan fell to the floor, sobbing. He clutched the glove to his chest as he cried his heart out. His happy moments of life from the night before had just been turned against him, and his only chance to be recognized and rescued from this hell had just been taken away. Nathan wiped his eyes as he tried to reason with the truth of his situation. He will never have an escape. He will always be a prisoner in his own home...
