Ugh, back to reality.
I trudged up the front steps, keeping my head down. None of the guys were with me as I'd had them drop me off at my house so I could get some stuff. In all honesty, I mostly just wanted to give them an out, so they didn't feel like they had to be around me. The bell ran so I raced to make it to first period. I had no bullies or friends in my first period, which I told myself was a good thing. However, I had Phil in my next class.
I totally don't know that because he always sits next to the window and his hair looks amazing in the light.
Shut up, I can appreciate a strangers attractiveness.
Even if they are a guy...
First period passed without incident, with me in my usual hunched [popsition in the back, however, it was on my way to second period that I heard It's shout.
"Oi Fag!" I looked up startled. It was charging through the crowd towards me, several friends in tow. "You're dead, you hear me?!" Fear hit me like a freight train and I did the only thing I could: I turned and bolted.
I don't know how long or how far around the campus I ran, or when exactly they gave up chasing me. I didn't stop until my lungs were burning and my legs were killing me. I found a small storage room and ran inside, slamming the door behind me before collapsing against the far wall. I couldn't go to class and they'd look for me in any other hiding spot. So I sat with my head between my legs, desperately trying to catch my breath.
I was surprised with myself, honestly. By now, I was used to the pain, I didn't like it by any means, but I was used to it. However today there was something in It's eyes which spelt doom and promised that I'd regret my entire miserable existence even more than I already did.
I have no clue how long I'd been there for, I only realised that time was passing when my throat became really dry and my stomach began to growl. I had my bag but I'd left my food in my locker. I couldn't risk leaving, though, in fact, I had no idea how I'd even leave the school today.
My heart leapt into my throat and I let out a small yelp of sheer terror a the door opened.
It found me.
However, the familiar mop of black hair told me otherwise.
"Phil?" I croaked out.
"Dan!" he exclaimed. I winced at his sudden volume and he took the hint, closing the door and sitting beside me, flicking on the light first.
Well here we are again, I guess.
"Are you okay?" he asked gently.
"I'm fine," I lied. "What are you doing here?"
"Looking for you. I didn't see you in second period so we all got worried."
"What time is it?" I asked, trying to divert my thoughts from Phil worried face.
"Lunch. Are you hungry?" he asked. I nodded.
"I can't leave, though," I admitted in a whisper. He didn't question me right away, instead grabbing his bag and offering me part of his lunch and a water bottle. I took it gratefully and we ate in silence for a few moments.
"Why can't you leave?" Phil asked, breaking the silence with the question I was dreading.
"He's after me," I admitted. "He promised to kill me." Phil's face hardened.
"I- we won't let that happen." he promised. "we have the next class together, right? Do you have any of us in your last one?"
"Alfie," I replied after a moment of thought.
"Okay," he replied, seeming to form a plan in his head. "Don't go anywhere alone, okay?" I nodded in response. "I'll walk you home too."
"Thank you," I whispered gratefully. He smiled.
God I love his smile.
"No problem," he replied, wrapping one arm around me. In daylight, I would have been embarrassed but here, in the dark, I just felt comfortable. "What are friends for, right?"
Friends.
