I began to stare at my fingers while I walked. I moved one finger towards my palm and then another from my opposite hand toward my other palm and revolved them around.
And then it hit me.
"Shit, man watch where you're going!" I hear a sixth year yell as he picks up his stuff.
I knelt down to help him gather his things, "Hey I'm so sorry.."
"Oh it's alrigh-"
"My head just isn't in it today."
"Hey, I get it. Now please, shut, up."
"Yeah, alright."
"Hey, you're that Black kid, right?" he smiled, sending mixed messages about not only my race but also on his insistence on me shutting up.
"Oh no I'm- Yeah I'm him," he clearly saw my confusion and began to wag his finger at me.
"So you know James Potter? Right?" his eye contact made me uncomfortable. His eyes were a perfect, mesmerizing green and they deeply tempted me.
The mere mention of James' name stung. A long string of heat traveled and maneuvered its way around my spine, "Um, Yeah. He's my- He was my best friend," my throat grew dry, my palms grew sweaty and I compulsively wipe them on my robes.
"So how about you tell him to back off off my friend?!" he calmed down after he saw my confusion.
"Wha- Uh- I?"
"You know.. Snivellus."
"Oh.. Uh.. I don't really talk to Pro- James v-very much.. so."
"So I have to hunt him down," we both stood up.
"Um. Yeah, I suppose." Though. I'd rather He didn't hunt James down, I couldn't really stop him. His tall frame overlooks mine. I'm not even short, I'm about 5'9". He was at least 6'.
"The name's Michael."
"Huh? Oh.. Um. Sirius."
"I know," he said, a smile plastered between his cheeks. My face grew hot.
"Damn it, sorry," I try to look away but only see his biceps. My heart pounds quicker than ever.
"Don't worry about it. Maybe I'll see you around?"
"Uh.. Um.. Yeah. Definitely." I reach out for a handshake. His massive hand envelopes mine and his firm handshake nearly turns my legs to jelly. I see a funny look on his face. I begin to wonder if he was expecting more than a handshake?
"Alright, well. Um... Goodbye."
"Bye."
For the first time in months James was not the only thing on my mind.
I kept aimlessly walking through the halls, stopping occasionally to read flyers or get a drink.
I made my way back to my bunk. A long relaxed breath escapes my mouth as I fall backward onto my pillow.
"Shit," my Defense Against the Dark Arts paper was due tomorrow. I moved myself around, crossed my legs and flung my bag up in front of my feet. In front of me lay my textbook, parchment, and ink. Yet my quill seemed to have eluded me. I frantically search around for it - hoping that it will magically appear.
I stomp around the room, scratching my head, and checking and rechecking my stationery for my quill. I did this for five minutes before I realized that I'd loaned it to James. I pivot around and stare at his bunk. The moral question arises, do I search his bag for my quill or do so find another. I dismiss that and begin digging through his things.
I find a note:
Dearest Lily Potter,
I find you very interesting and I, um, think you're pretty. Would you please accompany me to the ball... dance.. thing?
~James~
"Find what you were looking for?" says James from behind.
