Chapter Four - Practice makes perfect
I stay up in my bed that night, listening to the music below. Everyone out in the capitol is partying while back home, my family are starving along with everyone else in our district.
Tomorrow, trainings begins. I'm nervous, so nervous at one point my knees are shaking. I'll be with all the other tributes for the first time, and depending how well I do in training can be the difference between life ands death. After three days of training we are given time alone with the game makers to show them our special skill, I haven't figured mine out yet.
After, they have spent a night discussing each tributes special skill they give them a score between 1 and 12. This score is a rough guideline to how well they think the tribute will cope in the arena, and sponsors will be paying very close attention to these scores. A good tributes parade, a high score and grabbing the attention of the capitol with an interview could save your life.
Sometimes, tributes pretend to be weak and useless. So they gain a low score, so the other tributes don't see them as a threat. And, then they come out fighting, and become the victor. Its a hard game to play though, if you don't get a good interview you may end up with no sponsors, and die of infection or thirst. Sponsors can send u medicine, and water, a couple of years ago a boy was once sent a sword.
He didn't win, but he did make it to the final four, he wouldn't have got that far without a weapon to kill.
On the first day of training again i am woken by knocking at my door,
" Coming Fonda!" I shout loud enough for her to hear.
Fonda doesn't reply and she knocks on the door again, several more times saying nothing.
"Fonda?"
She doesn't reply. I walk up to my door and unlock it, standing there isn't Fonda but an avox. She bows her head lightly and walks across the hall to anther room. I watch her intrigued, and after a few knocks on the door i can hear Seeder shout,
" Wont be long, will be out in a minute."
I shower and wash my hair, when i come out i smell of strawberries, a delicacy i often grow but have never ate. When i emerge out of my bedroom everyone id waiting at the table, except Thresh. The avox is standing there, pouring Seeder a glass of water. I suddenly feel a pang of guilt in my heart. I thought i had it hard back home, but this girl cannot speak, she has no family or friends.
She was totally alone in this dark world.
Fonda tries to appear happy abs content but the longer Thresh takes to arrive the more annoyed she became. Eventually she rises from the table and said with a harsh tone to her voice,
"Perhaps young thresh will appear when i call him."
She walks away, her high heels clicking along the marble floor. Seeder shook her head and sighed.
"Cover your ears."
" Why?"
That was a stupid question.
" Hurry up! Training begins in less than an hour and youneed to be ready! HURRY UP!"
Fonda's shrieks shook the glasses on the table and some orange juice fell onto my croissants. An avox quickly appears and wipes away the mess.
Fonda comes back looking positively furious, she sits down trying to keep her cool. Her face had went from the pale rosy pink to bright red, and her eyebrows crossed in anger. Thresh comes to the table a few minutes later, giving no explanation to his lateness. He sits and helps himself to the great buffet. Back home for breakfast in lucky if i get to eat one slice of toast.
