The morning sun shines through the window brightly as my eyes drift open. Sitting up, I rub my tired eyes. I stand up, then put my combat boots on, and walk downstairs. My mom is down there looking through the shabby, torn curtains.
She turns around. "Good morning (y/n)." She's a woman of few words, the quiet one. I respect that in her, and though she's quiet, she is strong. She always stands for what she believes in no matter what the cost.
My dad makes his way down the stairs with our backpack, going through the kitchen cupboards, looking for any bits of food. He finds a few cans of fruit, some water bottles, and a box of saltine crackers.
He shrugs and looks at my mom. "That's all they've got here. Should we keep looking for food, or are we good for now?" He says questioningly.
"We're good for now. We can survive a week or so off of that." She says with certainty.
"Alright, let's get a move on it now." He says as he pulls out his pistol from the holster on his side.
He was a deputy before this all happened. It was hard for me, because I didn't want to ever lose my dad. I never did though, so I'm glad about that.He turns to me. "C'mon (y/n) lets go."
I follow them out the door silently, looking around frightened and nervous for one of the monsters to jump out at us.
We hurry to our car parked out front. We have a Black Hyundai Sonata with tinted windows. Handy thing to have during an apocalypse, you could easily hide from other people. We had found that people were starting to kill others the hard way. We heard gunshots at the last house we stayed in, looked out the window, and saw a man shoot another man in the street. We fled after that. To the house we left just now.
We drive off down the street, almost hitting a couple of walkers. Though, we got lucky and dodged them. My dad knew exactly where we were headed next.
The woods.
After a while of driving, we find a dirt road leading up into the woods off of the highway. My dad stops the car, motioning for us all to grab out bags and get ready to walk fast. We leave the car parked halfway up the trail, in case someone tried to take it, it'd be safe. Up the trail a mile or so, we stumble upon a campsite with campers not to far up. a group of four or so people sit around a campfire. They freeze, their eyes locked on us, fear filled expressions on their faces. A tall, dark haired man stands up and heads toward us.
A man walks up with a smile on his face and greets us. I smile and thank him, because that's the nicest thing I've seen from
person so far.He seemed like a pretty nice man. Louie. He led us to a camper and set us up there. I smiled as I laid down on the soft couch inside of the camper. My parents smiled because of how relaxed I was. We finally felt safe, safe with Louie and his family.
A soft knock on the door of our camper startled us. My mom hesitantly walks over and opens it. Louie stands there.
"''ello miss, dinner is ready, y'all can come out whenever you're ready." He says with a kind smile.
My mom looks at my dad and I with enthusiasm and says, "they have dinner ready!"
*
We walked out of the camper laughing at one of my dad's cheesy jokes. Louie pulled up three chairs at the table for us and we sat down. He had some kid of meat, a green vegetable, and glasses of water. He smiled as the three of us ate our meal and finished quickly. I turned to him. "Thank you. This was lovely." I said with a smile.
He nodded and replied, "you're very welcome m'lady."*
We stood up and headed back to our camper for the night. My parents laid down and fell asleep fast, they looked happy. This felt like the best place on earth. I decided to go outside for a while and look up at the stars. I went out into the woods and found a meadowy patch, and laid down. The soft grass tickling my skin as I laid there, the absence of noise calming.
This was great...
