"Hey guys, we're going back to the beach house, come on!" Gray yelled, beckoning with his hand. "The barbecue's starting in an hour and we still gotta get ready!"

| Chapter 20 |

We arrived back at the beach house and everyone plopped onto the couch to rest their sore legs. Erza suggested using the jacuzzi to help relax our muscles after the campfire.

Uncle Brian came in holding graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate bars. "The barbeque is outside, and I'm getting ready to start the campfire. You guys coming?" We cheered and everyone rushed to the backyard.

Soon after, everyone was sitting around the campfire, enjoying the hot dogs and corn-on-the-cobs that Uncle Brian had grilled. As Natsu and Gray fighted over the last hamburger, Uncle Brian continued to pester me with questions about my relationship with Natsu, while Erza and Levy giggled on the side.

"We're not really..." I trailed off, hoping he'd get the idea. I put down my hamburger. "I don't think my father would allow it, anyways."

"What about in the future?" He flipped a patty over on the grill.

"Um..." I glanced at Natsu who sat on the opposite side of the campfire. He and Gray were having an eating competition. It looked as if he was winning based on Gray's scowl. "My father wouldn't allow it."

That got Natsu's attention. "What do you mean by that?"

"Nothing."

"I know it's not 'Nothing.'"

"It's nothing important!"

"I'm not good enough for you?"

"No, it's just that my dad—"

"Well, your dad has a weird sense of what's right for you."

"Don't insult my father," I snapped. I couldn't believe him. He knew how important Father was to me, especially in his current condition and he still had the nerve to start a fight over it?

"Me? You started it."

"And you added to it," I shot back. I heard crickets humming in the background and it suddenly dawned on me that we were the only ones talking. The rest were glancing nervously and each other. My cheeks burned.

Uncle stood up and pointed at the house. "Uh, I'm going inside, I have some errands to run. You kids enjoy yourselves, okay?"

"Natsu, why'd you do that?" Erza hissed.

"I didn't do anything!"

"It doesn't matter," I said, throwing out my plate. "I'm going anyways."

He sighed and stood up. "Come on, Lucy. I didn't mean it like that."

I turned my back against him. "I know exactly what you meant."

"Lucy—"

"How could you?" I asked, whirling around. "You know the situation he's in and how much he means to me and you—you—" I let out a frustrated groan. He opened his mouth to speak, but I cut him off.

"And I know that it's partly my fault and maybe I'm overreacting a bit—but I can't help it! He's literally—" I bit my lip to force myself from going overboard as my voice cracked. But this time, I don't cry.

He moved forward, his hands reaching for mine, but I stepped back. "Don't," I said, and his arms dropped to his sides. Everyone's eyes were on us and I couldn't stand another minute of making a fool out of myself.

I turned away from him. "I'm going in. I want to be alone."

"But you're going to miss the campfire!" Levy said.

"That's fine, I don't need s'mores."

"Levy and I will save you a few," Erza said.

"Lucy—" he started.

"Natsu, please." He was silent. "Goodnight guys."
