Chapter 13 DPOV
A figure emerged from behind the trees, slowly walking towards me. As she came closer I saw that her brown curls cascaded beneath her shoulders. Her eyes were a chocolate brown, and they stared right at mine, whilst a cheeky grin played on her lips. She wore a black tight fitting dress, strapless. She had on no jewellery- she didn’t need it. She wore a pair of red stilettos, yet I still towered over her. As she stopped in front of me I got a whiff of her scent. It was intoxicating- in a good way though. She had a hand on her hip and looked like she was enjoying me admiring her. I stepped forward so our bodies were closer together, and reached up to cup her face. I looked deep into her eyes and I knew she wanted me to kiss her.
"What do you think?” she asked coyly.
“You’re beautiful, Roza.” I breathed. She smiled up at me. I wrapped my arms around her waist and bent my head down, our lips were almost touching. She closed her eyes and I leaned in closer, eager to put her lips to mine, when suddenly-
I awoke to the sound of my alarm clock buzzing. I sat up, startled. Looking at the clock I found it was 9pm. I had training with Rose in thirty minutes. I got up and had a quick shower and shave. I then got dressed into some running pants and a tank top and made my way out onto the field where I’d told Rose to meet me. It was the weekend but because Rose had promised to train harder I’d scheduled weekend training sessions. I started stretching and by the time I’d finished Rose had just arrived. I told her to do some stretches and once she had, we started to run laps. She was at a steady pace and showed a small amount of improvement each session. When we’d first started running laps I was shocked at how quickly she’d gotten tired. She’d only been able to do one lap of the field when she’d complained the distance around the track was too great and running around the gym would be easier. Of course I’d laughed at that and she’d pouted, being serious for once. I’d explained to her if she were trying to escape with Lissa she’d need to do better than that. A reminder of Lissa had her up on her feet again and she pushed herself harder and harder each time, completing more and more laps to the point where I said I’d start timing them but set the number of laps she had to do. Today she’d been 30 seconds faster than last time, she wasn’t happy when I told her.
“I need to be faster.” she said, eyebrows furrowed.
“You will be, in time.” I reassured her.
“Strigoi don’t slow down. At this rate they’ll catch us before we take our very first step.” She huffed.
“Never turn your back on a strigoi.” I said. “You won’t live long enough to realise your mistake.” She nodded seriously.
“You need to start setting goal times, so you have something to work towards each session.” I said, as we made our way back towards the dorms.
“Like a minute faster each time?” she asked.
"Not that much, you don’t want to push yourself to hard.” I told her. “Try to get half of that, so 30 seconds faster each session. Do that until you beat me.” She laughed.
“Like I’d ever be able to beat you, I’ve seen you run and I-” she shook her head in awe. “- I could never run like you can.”
“With practise you will.” I said and she gave me a small smile. “But I mean, come on, you’ll need a lot of practise if you’re going to out run me.” I teased. She rolled her eyes, but I saw a smile make its way onto her lips. I hadn’t seen one of those in awhile, ever since the bloodwhore rumours... Mia Rinaldi’s face flashed in my mind and my fists clenched.
“Are you okay?” Rose asked, looking concerned.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I said, looking away from her. “I’ll see you later then.” She nodded.
“Okay, cya.” I walked away with revenge fresh in my mind.

I sat down in the back pew as always. I was early to church again, long before anyone had arrived. The priest was setting up, he walked over to me once he’d finished. He had a kind smile.
“How are you today Guardian Belikov?” he asked.
“I’m well thanks reverend.” I answered politely.
“And how is your youngen, Miss Hathaway doing? Is she catching up to the other students?” he asked. I cringed at the word youngen, another reminder I could never act on my feelings for Rose.
“She’s making great progress, reverend. I’m pleased.” I said with a straight face. He smiled.
“With a mentor like you I’m sure she’ll end up more skilled then the rest of them. I see you both run past here when you’re training, she really looks up to you, it shows.” I did my best to control my alarm when he said the last part, for a second I thought he knew but he just smiled seemingly unfazed. People started arriving then and the Priest went over to welcome them while I sat their wondering if anyone else would think that way to. I’d have to up my guard to make sure I didn’t slip up.
Once everyone had arrived- including Lissa and Rose who sat up the front- the priest started his session and I listened closely, analysing everything he said about god’s forgiveness and how no crime could be to great- he would always love you. It made me think back to Zeklos. If I’d been there to protect him when the strigoi attacked would he still be alive? Or would’ve he forgiven me if I’d been their but been unable to save him? I’d never know the answer but I turned to god, the priest said he’d forgive me, which gave me some comfort about the whole thing, and maybe one day, I would be able to forgive myself to.
Movement from up the front caught my eye and I saw two boys in the pew next to the girls, they were staring at Rose, laughing. My eyes narrowed as I saw Rose look away, visibly upset. Suddenly Lissa whipped around to face the boys, she glared at them with a burning hatred, I’d never seen any emotion from her that intense, she’d always been so calm and collected. Rose looked shocked as she watched Lissa speak to the boys, worry in her expression. The boys stopped laughing at once and as soon as Lissa stopped talking, both of the boys practically shouted apologies loud enough for me to hear them. When they stopped Lissa snapped at them and Rose’s eyebrows furrowed, showing she didn’t approve of what Lissa was doing, what exactly that was I couldn’t say. Rose grabbed hold of Lissa’s arm but Lissa didn’t take her eyes off of the boys; her eyes shot daggers at them as Rose said something into her ear, murmuring to her. The look of hatred in Lissa’s eyes slowly faded and after a few short moments she took her eyes off of the boys and turned her attention back to the front as if nothing had happened and Rose did the same except both her and I watched Lissa warily and I wondered what had just occurred between them.
My attention was drawn away from the girls as the priest got to the climax of his speech and soon thoughts of Zeklos played in my mind once again. Sadness. Regret. Loss. He had been my closest friend, after he’d died I’d never let myself get close to anyone ever again, I’d even cut my family off by moving to another country, we still spoke of course and I loved them deeply but I couldn’t imagine what it would feel like losing one of them. My only friend’s death had caused me enough pain, I couldn’t go through something like that again. Dhampirs didn’t last long in this world, only the best died naturally.
When the service ended I was relieved and was the first one out. It was good to get out of their and clear my head. I went back to my room and read one of my favourite western novels until eventually it was time for me to head to practise.
