I collapsed on the floor of my bedroom not wanting to get up and continue to pack my three suitcases. "MAHHH!" I let out the exhausted sigh that sounded like a cow dying.
Any minute I knew my worried
mother or sisters would come rushing in to see if I was still alive."Katie sweetheart are you okay?" My mom crouched down on the white rug to look at me. "No Mom, I sick of all of this packing." I sighed and let out a groan. "Honey your almost done keep working at it. You have been looking forward to go to this camp for so long!" My mom said grabbing my running spikes and placing them in my suit case. "I know mom I just never packed this much in my entire life." I replied as I struggled to get back up on my feet. "I know sweetheart I know. We ordered pizza in wings as the last supper it will be here soon. Okay." Mom said kissing my forehead. "Okay, well you know where to find me." I replied.
I looked around the room at my trophies, banners, and newspaper articles. 'This is every athletes dream.' I thought to myself.
"Hey." A voice brought me out of my thoughts and I instantly knew who it was. "AMY!" I shouted and ran to her with open arms. "Hi Katie." She said. "I can't believe your leaving tomorrow." She continued and looked at my suitcase. "I know it's crazy right." I said and turned to her. "Can you help me pack? I have been doing this for hours and I really want to go to bed soon because my flight is at 4am." I said and let out a desperate sigh. "Say no more." Amy said and started to get clothes out of my drawers.
Amy is one of my closest friends, she is always there for me and supports me a lot more than a friend should. She gorgeous and could get any guy she wanted. Her dark brown hair goes down to her back and her big brown eyes complete her face making her look like a goddess. The one thing about Amy is that she is very conservative and doesn't let any guys get close to her because she's afraid of getting hurt. She's a track athlete just like me, but instead of doing cross country she does soccer in the fall.
We argued on whether I should a couple dresses just in case. Amy knows I never dress up or go on dates. But if I know Amy she will put those dresses in one of my suitcases once I'm finished packing.
We went downstairs after I was finished packing to greet my family for the last meal I will ever have with them.
"Are you finally finished packing?" My older sister Carrie asked me.
Carrie graduated high school this year. She is extremely smart and was in the top ten in her class. Like my father she is going to Cornell University and carry on the family tradition. She has bright blonde hair that rest on her shoulders that bring out her hazel eyes.
"Yeah we just finished." I said as I grabbed a plate. I tried to pull out a chair but the legs of the chair go tangled with the one my younger sister is sitting in, Riley.
Riley was fourteen but she was kind of a disappointment. She had to repeat the first grade and she was always causing trouble. Now that she is in middle school her grades are starting to improve but all she does is play on her Nintendo DS and barely communicates with any of us.
"Riley can you please put that thing away sit right in your chair and talk to us?" I asked trying not to shout. Riley let out a huff and sat up and stared at her plate. "Thank you." I said and rolled my eyes and sat down.
"So are you excited about the camp?" Carrie asked as she grabbed another chicken wing of her plate. "I am actually looking forward to it. I might improve and can finish my high school career out with a bang." I said with a smile. "Well we will miss you." My dad said grabbing the ziti and putting it on his plate.
"Katie." Amy whispered. "Coach called me and said he needs some help down at the floral shop do you wanna come with me?" Amy asked looking at her phone. "I can ask." I replied and she nodded.
"Hey mom, dad, can Amy and I go down to the floral shop to see Mr. Emerson? I want to say goodbye before I leave." I asked hoping and praying. "It's a little late don't you think." My dad asked looking at his watch. "Dad it's only 5." I replied. "You can go just don't be gone for to long girls." My mom said before she took another bite of her salad. "Thanks you guys. I promise I'll be back soon." I said as Amy and I walked out the door.
Amy and I walked out of the door onto the patio. "Your mom has done a lot of work to the garden and it looks so pretty." Amy said and looked at the Lilly's. "I know she works on it whenever she doesn't get called it at the hospital." I reply as we walk to Amy's car.
Amy has a pretty first car it's one of the early Buick's, it has leather seats and its in really good condition with it being almost ten years old.
"Okay I got the text from Emma and she said she was over there helping him with the roses for a wedding so..." Amy said as she backed out of the driveway. "I think it must be pretty big if he needs our help." Amy said. "Who in their mind would want to get married?!" I asked and laughed.
I never liked the thought of getting married or having kids. I was always independent and always could do everything alone. That's probably why I only had one boyfriend in my entire life because he would just be so clingy.
"Katie I bet your gonna come to our high school reunion with a husband and four kids." Amy said and she always said it to make me mad. "Why do you say that?" I asked frustrated while Amy laughed. "One day your going to find somebody and your going to love them so much to the point they will drive you insane." Amy told me as we drove through the village. "Are you going to miss it here?" Amy asked as I looked out the window. "I mean yeah but New York just isn't at a good place right now. Our Governor isn't the greatest and all of the teachers are losing their jobs, it will be nice to get away for awhile." I told her. "I know it's sad, senior year is going to be so different." Amy said as she turned onto the road. "We just have to make the best of what we have." I said as we turned into Emerson's floral shop.
Amy and I got out of the car and walked up to the floral shop door. We entered the shop and saw the shop was full of roses.
"Holy shit." I whispered to Amy and she laughed.
We got to the back of the shop and saw a frantic blonde running all over the green house and instantly knew it was Emma.
Emma was another one of my closest friends. She is a soccer player like Amy and does track in the winter and spring. She had bright blonde hair that went past her shoulders and big blue eyes. Once she saw us she was relieved.
"Thank god your here. We need to get all of these roses out of here." Emma said frantically. "We're on it." Amy says and we get to work.
It was almost 7 when we finished and we were all exhausted.
Mr. Emerson enters the shop with a smile on his face when he see's the three of us in the middle of the pile of surrounding roses.
Mr. Emerson is an old man with creases on his skin and gray hair that covers his head. You can tell he has trouble walking but it doesn't stop him. This man was my coach and the best mentor I've ever had.
"I can always count on you girls." Mr. Emerson says with a smile across his face. "It's the least we could do." I replied. "Your flying out tomorrow?" He asked as we grab the buckets of roses and put them in the fridge. "Yeah I just finished packing." I replied and continued to help with the flowers. "I hope you have fun, but Katie not everyone is given the opportunity that you have and I hope you realize how far you have come." He said and put a hand on my shoulder. "I know I get to run with competition and I get to become a better runner." I said and he chuckled. "Make us proud, Katherine." Mr. Emerson said and pulled me into a hug.
