Do you ever get excited chasing after something that you truly love, but at the same time you're terrified?
That is how I felt leaving home, my friends, and my coach. In almost every situation there is a good and a bad. The good for example is that I get to see new things and have more experiences. The bad is that I have to do all of these things without the ones that mean the most to me.
So here I was standing with my father at Syracuse airport getting my ticket just letting all the anxiety build up inside of me. Just waiting for everything to happen so it could be done and over with.
Until this morning, I didn't realize the next meal I would have with my family would be September 1st and that I wouldn't see them until then.
I realized that I was going to miss my sisters graduation party and her moving into her dorm at Cornell.
The worst part out of all of this I think is the fact that the last person to see me before my flight is my father. Every thought drove my blood pressure through the roof and it was the worst habit I have.
"Alright so this is where you put your luggage." My dad said and I set my bag on the belt knowing that the airline would not lose my luggage because all of athletic wear was in that bag. "Now all you have to do is get through security." My dad said taking my carry-on into his hand. "Where is that?" I asked looking around for the sign. "It's right up this way, Katie." He said pointing to the direction we were headed in.
We passed food and magazine stands on both sides of us. It was torture to walk by a Starbucks and not getting anything even though I begged my father to buy me some.
"Katie, we don't have time for this." Dad said with chuckle as I sighed in defeat. "Didn't you have enough coffee this morning?" He asked me. "I never have enough coffee." I said adjusting my New Balance Nationals bag onto my shoulders.
We got outside the security check-point and the lines weren't busy, which surprised both me and my dad.
I starred at line for a minute before I looked back at my father.
We never really did farewells well even when I went to nationals or states it was always just the simple 'bye' or 'seen you soon.' I don't know if it would be the same with me being gone for over two months.
"Oh come here." He said bringing me into a hug and rocked me side to side. "Your mother and I are so proud of you. Do you know that?" I nodded and started to tear up. "You came so far in the past sixteen years almost seventeen years. Don't tell your mother this, but since you won't be here on your birthday I'm giving you this." My dad said and pulled out his wallet. He started pulling out five 100 dollar bills and my eyes went wide. "Dad you don't have to do that." I stated but the stubborn man my father is he didn't listen. "Buy whatever you want just not drugs okay." My father said, I laughed, and nodded. "Be careful okay." He said I hugged him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Bye Daddy." I said, grabbed my carry on, and gave him a small wave. "Bye Princess." He said and stood there as I went through security.
Whenever I was little and my dad had to leave for business meetings my mom would always wait until he got through. "In case he ever gets in trouble I'll be here to pay the bail and get him the hell out of there." My mother always said.
Security was a pain in the ass though. Especially when you had people decked out in every single piece of jewelry that they owned. I don't wear jewelry only on occasions, this was not one of them. I was in leggings flats and a semi nice top because I was going to the airport. I remember when they had nationals in Florida this one lady in front of me was decked out in every single piece of jewelry and she didn't take all of it so she had to go back in forth through the metal detector. Let's just say that I almost missed my flight back home and my coach was not happy and he doesn't get unhappy very often.
Once I got through security I gave my Dad a wave that I made it through and he waved back at me. Now I walked down the long hallway to find my gate which was easy because it was the very last one. I sat down in a seat and put my book bag and carry on in front of me. I looked at my Nike fuel band to check the time it was only 9:30 and I had an hour and a half until my flight.
I decided to take out my phone and put on my headphones. I turned on an alarm a half an hour before my flight to make sure I didn't miss boarding the plane. I slowly started to drift to sleep.
I always keep an open mind for music except for Justin Bieber. I never really liked his music it never really got me I guess.
I recently got Ed Sheeran's new album and I don't think I skipped a song while listening to it. I came up with a theory that the United Kingdom has the best singers and songwriters. I was never a One Direction fan until their most recent album. I felt so ashamed for being a fan of their music because I wasn't one of those wild teenagers that scream at the mention of 'Harry Styles.' Then there is the United States I guess we have good music I mean I'm not saying we're awful.
My alarm went off and it was 10 and the flight gate was packed with people. Some of them were families others looked like honeymooners. I saw many men and women in business suits and briefcases.
I put my beats away and started to gather my stuff. Thankfully no one stole my stuff while I was sleeping but I don't think they would get very far.
"Good morning ladies and gentleman. May I have your attention as flight 286 to Charlotte starts to board. We will be boarding by Zone number which is located on your plane ticket. We will start by anyone who needs assistance to board the plane first." I lady said over the loud speaker.
I peered out the window to look at the plane to see how big it was. It was a pretty big plane and a lot of people are at the terminal gate. I had an estimate of 150 people which meant three on one side and two on the other. As long as I get the window seat I will be happy.
"Anybody who is in Zone 1 may board the aircraft." The loudspeaker echoed throughout the airport.
I looked at my ticket to see what zone I was in and I was in Zone 3. This camp must spend a lot of money on the athletes if they all are in business class.
"Passengers in Zone 2 may now board." The speaker said and I got in line grabbing my carry-on and backpack.
The line consisted of business men talking about stocks right before they board the plane. All I was looking forward to was finishing the book The Fault in Our Stars by John Green so I could watch the movie. I was only reading it because my school forces us to read over the summer. It's basically making us do homework even though we don't have school for another two months. It was the most pointless thing ever and I could rant forever about it, but I would save both air and my brain cells.
"Zone 3 is now permitted to board the aircraft." I loudspeaker rang and the line started moving.
I handed the man my ticket as he scanned and gave me a smile. "Thank you for choosing American Airlines." The man said and I smiled.
I walked through that long tunnel that ended at the opening of the plane.
There was a flight attendant to great us with a smile and tell us another thank you. I found my seat against the window and put my carry-on in the overhead compartment. I sat down and put my book bag between my legs. I took out my phone and called my dad to tell him that I'm on the plane.
"Did they arrest you already?" My dad said through the phone and I laughed. "Not yet. But I called to tell you that I'm on the plane." I laughed and said. "Okay well I'll call you to make sure you got there safely, okay?" My dad asked. "Yeah I will call you if I arrived early. I love you dad." I said through the phone. "I love you too kiddo, be safe." My dad said. "I will, bye!" I said before hanging up the phone and turning it off.
