The backstory of your OC is important depending on how much you want your OC to reveal their backstory. In some fandoms and anime the backstory is the factor that affects the main character in major ways. While other main characters, really aren't affected by their backstory in any way. To me there are 4 stages of importance of a character's backstory: simple, basic, detailed,and very detailed. The shortest backstory is simple. Then second shortest is basic. Then there's detailed and lastly, very detailed.
Simple- The backstory of your OC isn't all that important. The backstory may be mentioned at some points but, isn't really that important. The backstory includes why your character is where they are now and why they are doing whatever they're doing.
Basic- A basic backstory has some thought into it. Your OC's backstory may have a lot of gaps in their timeline. For example it may talk about when they were 4-8 than 9-14 than 15-17 and then the present. Instead of explaining each of their years they have ranges. I'm not going to get into what ranges are since you probably don't want to hear about math stuff now. Anyway a basic story has some thought but no actual details. You may write a sentence of 2 about each range but that's really it.
Detailed- In a detailed backstory, the OC may reveal a specific event for each age. For example at 4,your OC did blah blah blah and at 5 your OC did blah blah blah and so on. You may skip some ages and do a range but your range may only have 2 or 3 ages. When I say detailed, I mean, your OC's backstory is kind of complicated so you need 3-5 sentences or details for each age.
Very Detailed- In a very detailed backstory, the OC explains an important event at every age. They may also include specific months, holidays, occasions, and specific days, hours, minutes, and sometimes seconds. For example, your OC may explain what happened when they were born, then when they were 1 than 2 than 3 than 4 than 5 than 6 than 7 than 8 than 9 than 10 than 11 than 12 than 13 than 14 than 15 than 16 and so on until to how old they are now. To include specific dates, your OC may say,"..and than it happened, on 2003...my life changed...." or they might be more specific and say,"..and than it happened, my 10th birthday, 2003, 9:45 P.M....." So basically a very detailed backstory just has a lot of details
