We began driving around town, the air was crisp and there was the perfect amount of sun and clouds to make the scenery look beautiful.
"Do you remember any of this?" Stefan asked me.
"Yeah. It's amazing how much has changed though. What ever happened to the general store on the corner?"
"It burned down in 1982, and they never rebuilt" He said with a sad face.
"That's too bad. Oh Stefan do you remember when we went there to fetch some candy and you accidentally tripped and knocked over all the jars? Your father had a cow!" I said laughing.
"Oh my goodness that was so embarrassing I cannot believe you remembered that" He said with a red face.
We were laughing so hard Stefan ended up running into a curb, which resulted in us laughing even harder.
"Stefan eyes on the road" I choked out between laughs
"I'd like to keep my eyes on something else" He said with a wink.
Damn him, he knows how to flatter a girl.
We pulled up to The Grill and he got out and opened my door for me.
"Why thank you kind gentleman" I said with a curtsy
"You are welcome madam" He said with a fake British accent.
We started laughing again and decided we needed to go in and sit down before we fell over from laughing too much.
We sat down in a booth by a window and that nice boy Matt came up to us.
"Hey Stefan, what are you up to?" He asked.
"Oh I'm just showing an old friend around, Matt this is Adeline"
"Yeah we met yesterday, how are you?" Matt asked with a smile.
"I'm great Matt thanks for asking" I replied.
"No problem. Can I get you guys something to drink or eat?"
I'll have some waffles and a glass of orange juice please" I say
Stefan looked at me with a brow raised then said "That sounds good I'll have that too"
"Coming right up!" Matt left us and Stefan looked at me with a serious face.
"I have a question, Adaline. What were you doing in Italy all this time?"
"What do you mean Stefan?"
"I mean, why were you hiding in Italy all this time? You were there for some time, and you never left the town, why?" He asked.
"Well, I was in Italy admiring the scenery. In my 168 years I had never been and I wanted to go. It was beautiful, Stefan. Flowers lined every house and green hills stretched as far as you could see. It was a dream come true. I decided to go exploring, I wanted to learn more about this little place I had heard of.
It was called Bracciano. It was beautiful and had this medieval castle oh it was gorgeous.
But there was something about it, something mysterious that pulled me to this place and I don't know why. Maybe I just wanted to get away from life, after all I had no one. For a while I had no reason to leave. I was content there. But there was another vampire there. I only ever saw him once, but I felt him everywhere. It got to the point where I could not stand to stay there. I started feeling sick all the time, my head hurt and it was hard to feed.
I don't know if my symptoms and the man are linked but that is when I finally decided to leave there."
I stopped to look at Stefan and he had a puzzled look on his face.
"I'm sorry Adaline I was just being curious."
"You're fine Stefan, I understand." I replied with a smile.
"Hey here's your waffles guys." said Matt with a smile.
We both thanked him and dug in.
"These waffles are delicious" I said with a mouth full.
Stefan started laughing and stuffed his face full of waffle.
"What did you say?" At least that's what I thought he said.
We started laughing so hard we couldn't eat anymore.
We paid for our food and got back in the car.
"Well, what do you suppose we do now?" I asked.
"I know just the place" Stefan replied with a huge smile.
