"Tell me more about your previous relationships," Melanie asked the next morning. She was sitting in a chair in front of the writing desk with her legs folded and a cup of steaming tea in her hands; Louis was sitting on the bed, his back against the wall and his legs stretched, also with a cup of hot tea in his hands. He was confused that the girl suddenly found milk in her tea appalling and put three spoons of sugar in her tea - normally she'd add a bit of milk and complain about all those people who dared to put any sugar in their tea.
"Um, there've been three girls. You know the last one so I mustn't tell you about her," Louis muttered and took a sip of his tea. He winced, noticing it was too hot to be drunk yet so he put it behind him on the window ledge. "The first one was Hannah. She was with me in high school in my home town in England. She was just as goofy and silly as me and she had the same desire to go partying every now and then and just... enjoy life."
"What happened?" Melanie asked curiously and Louis realised then that Melanie had never asked him about his relationships really before. He wondered if it was because she about them or if she hadn't wanted to hear it then because she had already liked him too much.
"Well, I auditioned for something that required me to move to London. No, I won't tell you what it was. Anyway, we both thought we'd better end it there before we end up hurt because it was a long distance relationship. Back then I was too young to realise that long distance relationships work. They have to, in my job, or I'd end up alone with my friends. The ones I work with, I mean. Of course there are some girls working with me but... I haven't ever really paid attention to them because I always had my eye on someone else." He smiled sadly and pushed some of his hair back. He grabbed the cup again and took another sip, now satisfied with the temperature of the liquid. "Then, not long after that my friend Harry introduced me to a girl he worked with before he moved to London. Her name was Eleanor and I was mesmerized by her beauty. Wow, what a sap I am. Anyway, I asked her out because I was never one to shy away from pretty girls and she said yes and then we were dating for... what, two years? It was longer than my relationship with Hannah anyway."
"Why did you break up with her?" Melanie asked curiously; her cup was almost empty by now as she continuously sipped always a tiny bit.
"I found out she cheated. She felt neglected by me and then she broke up. I blamed myself for it until I met the next girl. I went to apologise to her. We wanted to make our breakup official to everyone - that's when I saw she had a new boyfriend already. I wasn't angry with her because I had found someone new as well but then she told me she had been with her new boyfriend for months behind my back." He shrugged and swallowed some of his tea down.
"I mean, of course I wasn't happy with that. I did love her after all. But I had someone else and she made me forget about it pretty quickly and I also fell really hard and quick in love with her. She was so beautiful and I still remember her smell and the way she smiled only at me and no-one else. It always made me feel so proud when I managed to get that smile out of her because I knew it was reserved for me and no one else. She made me want to become a better person. She made me want to be better until I finally felt like I would deserve her. She was so kind and lovely and always put everyone else's feelings in front of her own. I wish she would think of herself more often but I guess she'll always do that because she's scared of rejection..."
"What happened?" Melanie asked again and Louis loved this new found curiosity. He knew Melanie didn't ask too many questions when she didn't know someone well enough to know she wasn't annoying, so this was refreshing in some way. He wondered why the girl had changed so big in just a matter of three years - not that he would complain. The girl he met was the one he fell in love with after all, but this one was nice as well. He hoped he could have a mix of both when Melanie remembered everything... that is, unless she still wanted him then. The thought scared him but he still wanted her to regain her memory nonetheless.
