Chapter Five

Alex unraveled his arm from around my shoulders when their manager came in screaming about how they had to leave and get on the bus or their tour would be starting late. Cassadee looked upset as Rian got up from her side, going to grab his drumsticks from their place on the stool, leaving her to sit with the empty doughnut box balanced on her lap. She quickly threw it to the ground and laced her fingers with Rian's. Jack sat next to me as everyone moved around frantically, Zack and Alex were in a heated argument about how Zack's attempts at playing two guitars should never be done again. Jack sat still next to me, despite how active he was earlier. I didn't know what to do or how to help anyone and when Jack spoke I saw it as an excuse to stay where I was.

"Destery, yeah? That's a cool name." He was avoiding eye contact with me, though I turned to see his face close to mine. We were so close that I could see his wide brown irises and the thick, dark lashes that framed them, sweeping over the lilac curves of sleepless nights below, the long fringe that hid one eye and the slight stubble of his shaven chin.

He was absolutely lovely.

"Thanks, but call me Des." I smile as he finally made eye contact.

"Where are you from? Rian said the UK." His voice was quiet, which I could tell was a bit out of character for him.

"Edinburgh in Scotland," I replied, simply. I was about to ask where he was from when Rian threw a set of keys at me with the statement,

"You'll need to get your stuff out the car, Cassie's driving it back."

I rolled my eyes and stood up. Jack did too, slightly taller than Alex, yet still as skinny. I raised an eyebrow quizzically and I watched as one of his own thick eyebrows arches.

"I'll be a gentleman." He said smiling while following me out. I clicked the open symbol on the keys when we reached the car and opened the trunk.

"So, family?" Jack inquired, reaching in and grabbing my bag.

"Mum, dad, five brothers. You?" I said, hearing a symbol crashing to the floor and Zack cursing loudly.

"A sister and brother, mum and dad. Don't you have more luggage?" He asked, looking sadly into the empty corners of the trunk as if an extra suitcase might magically appear.

"No, that's it. I'm not that into taking heaps." He grinned at me when I said that and I slammed the trunk shut, feeling self-conscious. "Do they need you in there?" I asked, pointing to the source of commotion inside the building.

"Yeah." He replied and laughed, "but I'd rather stay with you out here. So," he added, as my heart skipped a beat, "you've known Rian for how long?"

"Well ... put it this way, I've met his brother and I knew him before his voice had broken and when he still had hair."

Jack nodded knowingly. "Wow. No kidding." He laughed and I did too, feeling elated. "So, a random fact about yourself?"

I thought for a moment, trying to come up with something interesting.

"I'll start if it makes it easier. Zack's colorblind." He said with a serious expression and a playful tone.

"That's not about you!" I exclaimed, laughing. He shrugged,

"Well, you have to tell me two, since I said something so interesting."

"Fine. Well, I speak French and Spanish and I live in my skinnies."How intriguing. Not.

He grinned, "Any room for me to live in there too?" He asked, stepping forward and reaching out a finger, slipping it through one of the belt hooks on my jeans. He didn't think about what he had just done, and when he did he stood there frozen in time. We looked at each other in the eyes intently, never wanting to look away.

"JACK!" A voice yelled, making us both jump away from each other. "Move your ass," Zack told us, shaking his head, "we're loading up the bus. Getting on. Leaving. No thanks to your undiluted help." Still shaking his head. Zack then returned inside to leave the back way with the others. Jack turned back to me and made a face. I smiled and fumbled for the lock button, suddenly averting his gaze. When I looked up, triumphant after locating it, Jack was close again. I heard a horn and the screech of tires against gravel and Jack grinned.

"That's the bus coming then. The cavalry."He explained.

I glanced down, smiling and secretly blushing. When I looked up, he was making eye contact with me. Without a word, he lifted his hand and brushed the long strands of dark hair that blew across my face. He pushed them behind my ear and didn't move his hand from just by my cheek, he kept his vision intent on my green eyes. He only turned away as the bus turned the corner and stopped a few feet away, the door being slid open by an impatient Alex.

"Move it, slackers." He demanded, jumping out and grabbing my bag from Jack and throwing it onto the bus, with its ominous tinted black windows. Alex jumped on and I followed, taking Jack's hand to help me up. Between the space of intertwined fingers, glittering electricity sparked.

'Let's get this show on the road,'I thought to myself.
