Chapter 12 You Say
"Jeny?" Mike's voice called out as soon as I turned the knob on the door. "Jeny is that you?"
No, I thought, it's Chase Crawford coming to rape you. I shook my head to clear my sarcastic thoughts and stepped inside the house, closing the door behind me. I checked the entry way of my house, searching for signs of something different. Everything seemed to be in its same place; the table by the door was still in place, with money and a few papers scattered over the surface of it. The carpet was still in its crooked place right in front of the door, since neither Mike nor I had the care to straighten it out. The family photos of us all still hung on the walls around it, and the umbrella basket thing was still in the same corner it'd always been.
The only difference was that there were two bags beside the door instead of one.
Now, it could be possible that Mike had packed two bags instead of one. Maybe after our fight Mike had wanted to stay longer than usual to cool down. But, that seemed unlikely, so when I walked into the living room, I was only mildly surprised.
Standing beside Mike- my brother, the same one who had tried to keep me off love, the one who was a total ladies man, a player, and would never bring girls home because he would just dump them the next day- was a beautiful girl. She looked about 25-ish, with long straight brown hair that extended to her chest. She had dark emerald green eyes, and pretty much flawless skin. Already at first glance I was jealous of her unmistakable beauty. Then those thoughts fled my mind as I wondered what she was doing here.
"Um...." I trailed off. "Who is this?"
Mike cleared his throat awkwardly, and rushed over to me and tried to lead me back to the door. "Hey, Jeny! Could you, uh, help me unpack?" he asked, pushing me to the door.
I shook my head and pulled out of his grasp, walking back to the room and pointing my finger at the girl. "No. You never need help before. I want to know who this girl is!" I exclaimed.
"Um...." he looked into the girl's eyes, glanced at me again, and walked over to her, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her closer. "This is Trixie, my fiancé ."
Wow. Okay. I was definetely not expecting that.
Trixie smiled up at Mike, who towered over her, and wrapped her arms around him too. The sight of them was so sickeningly cute that I had to look away.
"Jeny..." Mike said, pulling away from her and starting to walk over to me. "I know I shouldn't have kept this from you, but I didn't want you to freak out."
I stared at him, my mouth in a tight line, burning with rage. "You allowed yourself to fall in love. " I said. "You say no one is good enough for me. You say that you shouldn't fall in love because it will never work out. You've tried to keep me from being happy, and now you bring this girl home and say you're getting married?" I exclaimed, throwing my hands up.
His expression twisted into shock. "No, Jeny, you don't understand-"
"No." I cut him off. "I think I understand perfectly. And what I understand is that you're an asshole."
