Louder than the DJ

The room is nearly shaking with the tremendous amount of people that are dancing and going crazy to the horrible Dance music that's blasting through the speakers.
Who the hell had the wonderful idea of doing an obligatory party in school with all the people from my grade? Must have been a teacher.

I hid myself as well as possible in a corner with some guys that would (as one of them exclaimed loudly) "rather be at a rock concert". I can only agree with him, but it seems like me and the 4 punkrock guys are the only ones that think like this.

Everyone around us is doing "cool" dance moves and most girls are laughing hysterically whenever a boy gets a little closer to them. Fucking cunts.

Somebody falls against me and I get pushed in the middle of a group of dancers. Somehow I manage to trip over my own feet and topple over, splashing my coke all over myself and landing on the hard floor.

I don't really feel like being used as a carpet so I try to get up without getting any feet or hands into my face but nobody seems to be noticing me down there so I get pushed around.
Thankfully someone's hands grab me and pull me off the ground before I get mashed and I get an "are you okay" yelled in my ear.

"Yeah, just a little dizzy from being a punching bag" I yell back and try to make out my saviour's face while he pulls me into the corner I was in before the incident.
Turns out I was saved by one of the punkrock guys.

"Thanks for the rescue" I yell at him.
"No problem" he shouts back. "Those mainstream kids seriously need to learn manners, if you're in a mosh pit and someone falls down you help them, even if you're a lame EDM person and don't even know what a mosh pit is."

I talk to the guys for a bit, they seem cool and since all of us want to go home and listen to some good music we share our suffering to make it a little better. Still one hour until we can go home...

I still don't know the names of the guys but I end up talking to the guy that is wearing a Green Day shirt and discover that he also listens to Billy Talent, my all time favourite band.

"You know what, I'm gonna take over the sound system and put on some good music" he suddenly yells over the screeching sound of some pop artist's latest hit. I grin. "Need any help?"
Within 3 minutes we plan "operation good music" and get into position.

I casually walk over to the two guys that are in charge of the whole audio system and put on the flirtiest look I can achieve.
"Hey there" I say and lean on the desk they stand at. "I was sent to get you two, Mr Taylor says something is wrong with the speaker in the back and I'm sure guys like you have the skills to fix it..."

"Of course we have, right Dustin?" The bigger one announced proudly. "But you have to do us a favour, sweetheart."
I smile. "And what would that be?"
"Watch the audio system but don't touch anything okay? We don't want anyone to mess with it." He winks at me and leaves with Dustin by his side.

I give Green Day guy a thumbs up and he connects his iPod to the speakers.
"Hold your breath and count to four" he whispers into my ear. "One...two...three...four!"
And with that he presses play on the iPod and the horrible screeching is replaced by the divine sound of Ian's guitar, Jon's heavy bass line and the drums getting pounded with as much force as possible.
Then Ben's voice blasts through the speakers.

"The party's over let's call it a night, I hope you had the time of your life..."

"Turn it up" I hear Green Day guy yell at me.
I quickly search for the sound button and push it to the top. By now, everyone in the room has stopped dancing and looks surprised and shocked, some even as if they were betrayed.

"It's time you got a brand new fix, baby, LOUDER LOUDER LOUDER THAN THE DJ..."

As the chorus comes on, we lose it. Me and the guys jump onto chairs, tables and whatever else is in the middle of the room and go crazy. We yell along with the music, headbang and pull random people with us, soon starting a mosh pit. From what I can make out while jumping up and down and dancing, surprisingly many of the others join us in going crazy to Billy Talent.

"FASTER FASTER FASTER THAN THE AIRWAVES, LOUDER LOUDER LOUDER THAN THE DJ!"

About half of the room is dancing right now, it's crazy. The others just stand there looking at us like we're on drugs. More and more of them join, people dance with other people they don't even know and I end up half hugging and jumping up and down with one of the punkrock guys and a girl I could swear I've never seen before.

"RADIO NEEDS A SHOT TO THE VEIN OF ANGER FURY HEARTACHE AND PAIN"

Nearly nobody is standing at the side anymore, everyone is with us, rock and rolling like there's no tomorrow.

"SOMEONE SAID A LONG TIME AGO, ROCK'N'ROLL WILL NEVER GROW OLD, SHE'S STILL GOT THE FIRE LEFT IN HER BONES, THE LIGHTS GO DOWN, THE CROWD EXPLODES"

And then the guitar solo begins. There isn't a single person in the room that isn't jumping up and down, headbanging, dancing, playing air guitar or rocking their mind out. The mood is perfect.
And with one final

"LOUDER THAN THE DJ"

the song ends. For a moment there is silence. Then the door is pushed open and two teachers come running in. "Alright, WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS?" one of them yells. And Green Day guy and I just grin at each other and do a high-five.
