"Come on, Kyoko! This way!" Makoto chirped, dragging the small girl down the snowy sidewalk of their neighborhood. Kyoko, as usual, wasn't quite as enthusiastic as her friend, but accompanied him nonetheless. It was almost four in the afternoon at the time, meaning the sun would most likely be setting soon, so the overhanging dread of staying out past curfew weighed on her mind.
Still, she did follow, one hand in her coat pocket and the other hand holding Makoto's.
Suddenly, however, Makoto stopped in his tracks.
"Is something the matter?" Kyoko turned to him as he looked down at his hands in surprise. "It's my gloves... I lost them." He mumbled in reply. The Ultimate Detective-to-be sighed and frowned slightly. "I suppose you can use mine." She said, and her small friend's eyes widened.
"B-But you don't ever take off your-" The boy started, but was interrupted when Kyoko removed a mitten to reveal her signature gloves. 'She even wears them under her other gloves...?' He thought as Kyoko offered her mittens to him, which he accepted, of course. Makoto really wanted to know why Kyoko always wore those strange gloves, but because she was so secretive and mysterious, he knew he wouldn't really get anywhere and therefore didn't pursue it.
Soon, the pair arrived at a wire fence with a hole in it, that appeared to have been made by a raccoon or something of the sort, causing a quizzical expression to grace the young detective's features.
"Makoto, why on earth are we here?" Kyoko questioned. "Just follow me. You'll love it, I promise." Her friend smiled, ducking and crawling through the small hole, letting go of the girl's hand, who was a bit apprehensive to get snow on her clothes, but complied anyway. The lilac-haired child stood, brushing the cold substance from her gloves and knees, finally taking a look at where Makoto so badly wanted to show her.
Kyoko was positively stunned.
The barely-setting sun shone across the blanket of fresh, untouched snow, catching in the clear crystals and illuminating the ground like their own stars, right there on the earth. The area itself was a wide-open field, with some trees at the edge that poorly hid a frozen lake. Three slabs of rock were arranged as a crude substitute for a bench.
"Makoto, how... how did you find this?" She finally managed to ask. "During hide and seek!" Makoto smiled. "Nobody managed to find me!" He added cheerfully.
Kyoko trekked across the frozen plain before sitting down on the makeshift bench, Makoto following soon after.
"Makoto, look. Your mittens." The child pointed at her friend's mittens, which had been abandoned on the bench as he sat next to her. "Are you going to put them on?"
Makoto looked at the gloves, and then over to Kyoko, scooting a bit closer and taking her hand in his.
"Maybe later. I like yours a lot better."
