Opposites Attract (A Velvet and Yatsuhashi Fanfiction)

Velvet: Timid

She landed on her feet, looking around for a sign of any enemies. 

When she saw none, the bunny Faunus sighed and jumped into a tree. 

Velvet had gotten good at jumping from tree to tree back home, and she used that ability to her advantage now, almost running through the treetops.

She hoped there was somebody in this forest that didn't think of her as just a Faunus. And if they notice I am, I hope they won't make fun of me for it.

Velvet stopped as she heard the sounds of bullets being fired, and yelling. Who is that?

As she crept closer, she saw a girl wearing a black beret with brown hair wielding a giant machine gun that she was currently unloading on the Grimm.

Velvet's ears twitched. Could she be her partner? 

As the bunny jumped to another tree to get a better view of the fight, she saw a tawny-haired boy with dark skin slashing at another Grimm. 

Velvet was about to jump down and help when the girl finished off the Grimm, and the boy met her eyes.

She sighed. Oh well. On to the next area.

Velvet jumped up high, spawning a copy of that boy's armblades and landing on her feet on the ground.

She broke into a run, slashing down a Grimm that jumped at her. Checking her scroll, she dissolved the blades back into her box and calculated how much aura she would use in the next few minutes.

The bunny had always been good at rationing her aura, which professors said was part of why she was so skilled.

Velvet heard several growling noises behind her, and she spun around, spawning a copy of the girl's machine gun and firing it into the two Ursa that jumped at her.

As they fell to the ground, she saw a green blur jump past her and slam a huge sword into another Ursa.

Velvet took note of the sword, saving it for later.

As the green blur took a physical shape, Velvet saw a boy with short black hair wearing a kind of green armored tunic.

He smiled at her, and they made eye contact as he spoke in a thick accent.

"Hello."

Velvet smiled back. "Hi. Thanks for the rescue..."

The boy nodded. "Yatsuhashi. What's your name?"

"Velvet. You know, you're the first person I've met whose eyes don't immediately go up to my ears."

Yatsuhashi laughed. "Oh, those? I hadn't even noticed."

Velvet felt a blush spread through her cheeks. This was going better than she could have hoped for.

"Thank you."

I guess he's my partner! Better him than an anti-Faunus student.

She heard an explosion, and Yatsuhashi nodded. "Some of our fellow students have encountered the Grimm as well."

Velvet pulled down one of her ears nervously. "Should we go, then?"

Her new partner strapped his sword onto his back. "Yes. If we stay in one place for too long, more will come find us."

Velvet stopped him and crouched down, sensitive ears twitching. She detected solid stone a few feet away and stood back up.

"I think the relics are this way." She pointed to the right of them, and Yatsuhashi nodded. "Whatever you think, Velvet."

Sure enough, they came upon a clearing with a stone half-dome shaped ruin in the middle. There were at least fourteen pillars in a semicircle around the ruin, and Velvet ran down towards it.

Yatsuhashi was right behind her, and Velvet gasped. "The relics are chess pieces?"

Her partner smiled. "I guess we have to pick one, then. Your choice."

Velvet looked around, and her gaze settled on a white queen piece. There were four of each piece, two white and two black. "How about a queen?"

Yatsuhashi took the other white queen. "Sure. Now let's head back before more Grimm come."

They only got a few feet before a Deathstalker came crashing out of the forest. The girl and the boy Velvet had seen earlier were attacking it, the girl firing her machine gun from a distance and the boy slashing at its stinger.

As Velvet watched, the scorpion Grimm shook its tail, sending the boy flying backwards. The girl gasped. "Fox!"

Velvet brought her hand to her box. "We have to help them!"

Yatsuhashi didn't question, just drew his sword and ran at the Grimm. Velvet smiled, and spawned a copy of Fox's armblades.

The stalker's tail looked weakened, and the girl ran up to the Grimm, signalling for Yatsuhashi to move. When he did, the girl opened fire, detaching the stinger and sending it plunging through the Grimm's head.

That didn't kill it, however, and when Fox got back up, it looked even angrier. Velvet jumped into the air, readying the blades and slashing with deadly accuracy. She kicked its head, flipping back onto the ground and spawning a copy of the girl's machine gun.

Velvet and the girl both opened fire, destroying the stalker in seconds. When it was gone, Velvet dissolved the gun and turned to her partner and the other two.

The girl smiled and walked up to Velvet. "Hey, that's a neat weapon you have! I'm Coco, and this is Fox."

The boy waved, and Coco continued. "What are your names?"

Velvet pulled down her ear again. "I'm Velvet, and my partner's name is Yatsuhashi."

Yatsuhashi nodded politely. "You three can call me Yatsu if my full name is too hard to pronounce."

Coco grinned up at the boy. "Nice to meet you two. Let's get out of this forest before something else tries to step to us."

Velvet admired the girl's courage as she walked off in the direction Velvet and Yatsuhashi had come from. None of them have talked about the fact that I'm a Faunus! This is going to be a great year!
