His scroll buzzed as they were walking back to the dorm, and he pulled it out of his pocket. It was an unknown number, which Yatsuhashi had always been cautious about, but he opened the message anyway.
Yatsuhashi, we seem to have stumbled upon a teammate of yours. She ran into the Emerald Forest, and we couldn't stop her. She doesn't have her weapon, and we're worried about her.
Coco peered around his shoulder. "What's that?"
He showed the message to her, and she growled. "Great. Whoever sent this message is trying to kill Velvet."
Fox tilted his head. "How can you be sure of that?"
Coco picked up her briefcase and tossed her hair over her shoulder. "I just do. We have to go save her before something happens."
No one argued with her, or dared to argue with her when she was like this. They ran towards the launching plates as fast as they could without raising suspicion.
Yatsuhashi spotted Velvet's box on the ground by a plate, and he waved the rest of his team over. "She was launched on this one. We have to hurry."
There was a screech and a loud noise, as if something huge had crashed into something.
Coco gasped. "Uh oh. Let's go!"
They jumped on the plate one at a time and launched themselves into the forest, Coco carrying Velvet's box on her belt.
When they all landed safely in the forest, Yatsuhashi heard a loud thump, and the sound of a tree falling. He waved the rest of his team over.
"Something's over there."
They went to investigate, and Yatsuhashi saw an Ursa standing over a fallen tree. He crept closer, and saw Velvet lying in the wreckage of the tree, and he could tell her aura was down. The bodies of at least five other Ursai lay around the forest, and Yatsuhashi was relieved in knowing she had put up a fight.
He drew his sword and leapt at the large Grimm, killing it just before it hit Velvet.
Her eyes fluttered open as the Ursa hit the ground, and Yatsuhashi sheathed his sword, kneeling by her side.
She smiled. "Yatsu? What are you doing here?"
He brushed pieces of tree off her and smiled back. "I couldn't leave you in here alone."
Coco handed him Velvet's box and stepped back, biting her lip in an effort not to smile.
She pushed herself up to a sitting position, wincing. "Thank you, Yatsu. All of you."
Yatsuhashi nodded. "Why were you in here in the first place, Velvet?"
His partner sighed. "I didn't come in here willingly. Cashmere and Esmeralda launched me in here."
Fox growled. "The second years? Why would they do that?"
Velvet looked at the ground, her ears drooping. "I'm a Faunus. They don't need any other reason."
Coco frowned and lowered her sunglasses to look at Velvet. "They're gonna need a much better reason than that to pick on my teammate."
Yatsuhashi helped the girl up. "Velvet, even if that is the reason, it doesn't matter. We can't make all discrimination go away, but we can definitely protect you."
Velvet smiled. "Yatsu..."
She looked like she wanted to say more, but then her eyes widened. "Look out!"
Yatsuhashi turned around, but a black mass came rolling at him and knocked him backwards into a heap of trees.
He heard Velvet scream as the trees fell on top of him, and the loud explosion of Coco's minigun.
Yatsuhashi shook his head, pulling out his scroll to check his aura. It was at the halfway mark, which was never good. He sighed and tucked the scroll away, pushing the broken trees off of him.
When he finally got all the wood off, he saw a dead Boarbatusk laying in the clearing he had made, a glowing blue copy of his own sword embedded in its head.
Velvet was holding the handle, and he heard her sigh with relief as she saw him. The sword disintegrated, and Velvet ran towards him.
He caught her as she threw her arms around his waist. "Yatsu!"
Yatsuhashi laughed softly. "Nice work on the Boarbatusk back there. You aren't as helpless as they think."
She pulled away and blushed. "Yatsu... I don't care what they think anymore."
He nodded. "Good. You shouldn't care what other people think about Faunus, Velvet. Their opinions are shallow anyway."
Velvet pulled her ear down. "Thank you for everything. I...I needed friends like you three."
Yatsuhashi took her other hand, causing her to let go of her ear in surprise. "Let's get out of here. I don't want anything else to happen to you."
He heard Coco whistle behind them, and Velvet rolled her eyes, smiling up at her partner. "Yatsu, you're the best partner I could ask for."
He smiled softly and leaned down to kiss her head, right between her ears. She was shaking out of happiness, Yatsuhashi could tell.
Fox coughed. "Let's get out of the deadly forest first, please."
They ran towards the exit pads together.
