My eyes opened to a blurry setting…perhaps it were because my vision was a blurry haze. I blinked it away and couldn’t see nothing but a white ceiling, but I heard voices mumbling. I tried to sit up but there was something restraining me. I frowned and looked at what was causing a tug on my arm. An IV.
I looked around and noticed that I was in one of those disgusting white and blue hospital gowns with those little sticky things that stuck to your chest on mine. It was then that I heard the beeping and looked to my left. A heart monitor…wonderful. Was I at the hospital? I was so confused. I couldn’t remember anything that happened recently. I frowned as I thought around the headache. My birthday….my friends and I went to the club…I met someone-what was his name? Chandler. Yes. That’s it.
That’s when it all came rushing back. Werewolves existed. They truly and completely existed. My breathing sped up as did my heart. The monitor start to go crazy as it voiced my panic. That’s when someone burst through the door. A lady who looked to be in her mid-fifties with graying red hair. Her eyes were the color of pale emeralds. My heart beat spiked up even faster. I was still with them. Still in this crazy forest with the werewolves. “No…no…”
“Tell Chandler that she’s awake,” she mumbled to a little girl with her red hair in pigtails. Her curious green eyes pierced into my soul like a dagger piercing my skin. The little girl nodded then took off running for no other than Chandler.
All the while I was still mumbling no. The lady walked closer to me and I grabbed at the sheets. I didn’t want her near me. She was going to try and kill me. I just knew. They tried to last night. All of them. I was the prey in a house full of hunters.
“Don’t worry, Miss Scarlett. I have no intentions on killing you.” Her voice was stern. But her face was nurturing….it almost looked like she was sad.
I blinked at the blunt statement. It was refreshing to hear but my blood still pounded In my ears. Just because she didn’t plan to kill me…didn’t mean the other didn’t.
She waited for me to respond but when I didn’t she kept going. “I have been your nurse for the last couple days, Scarlett and-“
“Last couple days?” I asked. I was out for that long?
“Yes. You fainted after you screamed bloody murder and now here you are, two days later. In the infirmary.”
“What day is it?”
“Monday.”
“But…my roommates…they are probably worried sick about me. And I have class today…”
“Don’t worry, Chandler informed them that you fell down and hit your head and that you were here, sleeping in the infirmary. As for your classes today, I can’t say much about that. I am sure you finished the assignments and reading that was handed out anyway. Your brain reading detects that you a very intelligent young woman.”
I gulped. I missed class. I never missed class. This was a horrible nightmare that just wouldn’t let me wake up.
“Well, why am I hooked up to all over these wires?”
“Your adrenals went into overload. You went above the peak in an adrenaline rush…something that isn’t healthy at this stage in development.”
