“Hey,” I said as Chandler took a seat by me. I instantly went into his arms and sighed. I grabbed another tissue and dabbed my eyes with it. Drying the last of my memories before my heart had to break again by speaking about that forbidden memory. Chandler squeezed me, thinking that my tears were related to the state that Clarke was in, not knowing the truth yet. I didn’t feel the need to tell him about in at the moment. Not until I knew Clarke’s status. Until then I didn’t know if I could fully project my thoughts into words because I was so worried about my friend.
“So what is it that you wanted to talk to me about?” Chandler asked.
Just then a doctor walked up to us. I recognized him easily. I stood up at the sight of him. “Dr. Cross,” I said.
His eyes widened as he realized who I was and smiled. “Scarlett Gene! Long time no see! Why, I haven’t seen you since—“
I cut him off. “How are you?” I asked.
“Well, I’m doing quite fine. It’s so nice to see you!” he gave me a hug and a kiss on both of my cheeks and forehead. Chandler raised an eyebrow.
I cleared my throat. “Dr. Cross, this is my fiancé, Chandler. Chandler, this is Dr. Cross.”
Dr. Cross shook Chandler’s hand. “Fiancé? Aren’t you too young to be marrying? Are you even out of school yet?”
“I’m twenty-one years old and I will be out after the summer.”
“Oh my, I can’t believe you are all grown up now. The last time I saw you, you were in jumpers and tights. Now you’re getting ready to graduate! What are you going to school for?”
“Zoology,” I said with a shrug.
He smiled. “Your parents would have been so proud.”
I felt my throat thicken at his words. “Yeah…well…” I drifted and then I shook my head with a sigh. Dr. Cross was my parents’ best friend. He was granted to look after the hospital until I was of age if anything were to happen to my parents. And things did happen. So, until I was of age to take care of all the legal documents and whatnot, Dr. Cross cared for them. I was supposed to start taking over the hospital now but I never had a chance to come talk about it. I suppose I wasn’t going to be able to get out of it today. But I tried not to dwell on that factor at the moment.
“Did you operate on Clarke?” I asked.
He nodded. “Yes, I did. He nearly bled to death and it was hard to stabilize his heart beat but we got it. So, a very close call, but he’s alive. He’s awake as well—“
“Great! Are visitors allowed? Can I go see him?”
“In a second, Scarlett. But first, I need to know what happened to this young man. He won’t say a word about it. Would you happen to know?”
I shook my head. “Unfortunately, no. I found him in this state, walking on the highway, while I was coming from Chandler’s house and going to school. I didn’t even know it was him at first. I just saw that a man was hurt and I stopped the car and got out to help. He was reluctant at first but I eventually talked him into getting into the car. What were his wounds like?”
