Beep. Beep. Beep.
I groan loudly into my pillow as I slam the snooze button on my alarm clock, sitting up to stretch out sore muscles. I had spent most of the night tossing and turning in-between nightmares but at least it was some sort of rest physically, just not mentally or emotionally. I opted to shower this morning while the house was still quiet; Patty would be up around six thirty so it gave me time to get dressed and shave so she didn't see my disheveled state.
I slip across the hall and into the bathroom with ease, setting my clothes for the day on the sink edge while shutting the door silently. Ice cold water soon turned into hot water that steamed up the mirror as I stripped out of sweaty clothes, trying to be careful over my still inflamed thighs. I sigh in relief as the water soothed the ache in my muscles but hissed as it ran over the red marks coating my skin.
Almost every night ended up with more cuts or drinking myself to sleep just like my father does. I gently wash my blue hair, humming quietly to the song stuck in my head while the sun comes up silently. I hear the door open causing me to jump, "Who's there?"
"It's just me Sei, I needed to use the bathroom." I sighed in relief as it was only my little sister, "Good morning Patty, and that's okay just don't flush please." I saw her nod her head through the frosted glass, "Of course big brother." I rinsed my hair out before making quick work of my body, "You are up super early kiddo, why's that?"
She sighs, "I couldn't sleep with all the noise dad was making last night." Shaking my head dismally, I turn the water off and stick my hand out of the door to grab my fluffy towel. I gently dry my hair out wrapping the towel around my waist and stepping out to a very sleepy looking Patty. I laugh, ruffling her hair, "Patty you should probably shower to; it will help you wake up better and I'll have breakfast ready when you are done getting dressed. Sound good?"
She nods and steps out as I splash my face with cool water, lathering my face in shaving cream evenly before I hear her padding back this way. Shaving has always been the one thing I prided myself on ever since I was fourteen; clean and smooth was always the thing I loved the most about my face. I made even, gentle strokes as Patty comes to watch, "I'm almost done kiddo."
She nods, "Sei is it hard shaving? It doesn't look comfortable at all." I smile, shaving the skin above my lip, "No it can be irritating if not done right, especially if I nick the skin just right." She smiles, poking my left cheek that was still covered in cream, "That makes sense I guess, I'm glad I don't have to do it."
I chuckle, starting on my left cheek, "Yeah it can be a hassle in the mornings but I'm pretty fast at it now." Patty didn't ask anymore questions as I finished up and washed my face off, leaving her to shower in peace. I looked down the hall curiously; my parents' bedroom light wasn't on so that meant they had left for the day. 'Now the hard part, getting dressed for the day.' I think to myself as I start rummaging through my closet.
After ten minutes of trying to decide, I opt on wearing a pair of sweatpants and a Legend of Zelda sweater with a pair of Converses. I usually didn't dress up for school and the school didn't care what I wore as long as I came to school and did well. I walk down the stairs with ease, not needing to be quiet at this point seeing as it was just Patty and I.
It was quarter to seven now; I had an hour till class started and Patty had another two. I pull out the carton of eggs, butter and a pack of bacon and set to work on making egg in a frame with crispy bacon. I slide my headphones over my ears as I did work, singing my favorite song at the moment, "The brightness of the sun will give me just enough! To bury my lover! In the moon dust!"
I didn't even notice Patty sitting at the table as I slide the cooked egg in a frame onto each plate, "I long to hear your voice, but still I make the choice! To bury my lover! In the moon dust!" I slide my headphones to hang around my neck, "Hey Patty! Breakfast is ready!"
"Right here big brother!" I yelp, jumping at the sudden voice, "Shit Patty! How long have you been there?" She giggles, grabbing her plate, "Only a few minutes I promise." Rolling my eyes, I grab my plate and the plate of bacon before taking my seat next to her, "I'm sorry I subjected you to my horrible singing. Also would you like juice or coffee?" I stand up again, retrieving my Jack Skellington mug and her Star Wars cup, "Can I have coffee today? I have been extra good this week."
I chuckle filling our glasses up, "Sure Patty, but no more this week okay? It will stunt your growth." I slide the glass in front of her, adding sugar and milk just the way she likes it before tending to my own. "I know and don't smoke cause it stunts my growth too and is really bad for me." She recites as she cuts into the warm food; I smile, ruffling her hair, "Good girl. Now eat or we are gonna be late."
*Moon Dust*
I pull up to Patty's school about thirty minutes before my first class and an hour before hers; "Be good and I'll be here on time to pick you up!" I shout from the driver's seat, watching her wave as she walks up the steps and disappears into the crowd of teens. Turning my music up, I pull back out into traffic and head for my own school.
My parents bought me my favorite car for my sixteenth birthday and it stood out among all the other cars in the parking lot. While most kids drove SUV's or smaller cars, there were a select few who drove super sleek sports cars or luxury ones. I was one of the few who drove a sports car; a 1997 Mazda RX-7, a sexy black base with a stripe of silver on the hood and small portions of the doors. Needless to say, my car got a lot of attention when it pulled up to the school but no one really liked it's driver.
I noticed that my best friend had arrived before I had; her blue Charger sitting a row in front of me. I shut off the car and grab my backpack from the back seat before getting out into the brisk fall air; 'Damn it's getting cold fast.' I think to myself as I make my way to the building. I had earbuds in as I immersed myself into the large crowd, humming the words to the song as I wait to go through the metal detector.
Devora High School was a pretty big school but was notorious for its fights and for being in the top ten worst high schools in the state of California. Granted we were very close to L.A. but we had still managed to out do the schools there when it came to violence and test scores. The guard didn't say two words to me as he patted me down for weapons and other contraband and my bag went through the stick check next to me. I nod at him as I grab my bag and head for my locker, still ignoring the people who were complaining about everything possible .
I noticed that for once no one was standing in front of my locker when I arrived; 'That's odd, usually some idiot is standing in front of it.' I think to myself as I put the key into the bottom of the lock and take out one ear bud; I hear soft rattling as I pull the lock off the handle making me freeze. I rap on the locker door and the rattling grows louder; however being the idiot I am, I opened the door and ping pong balls flood out of the small space.
I sigh, banging my head on the locker next to me as they continue to fall out of my locker, 'Why does this always happen to me?'
"Yo! What the hell Fish-crackers?! What is up with all the ping pong balls?!" I turn my head to find my best friend stepping over the small fluorescence orange balls. "Hey Dani, sorry bout that but some ass-hat put a bunch of them into my locker. I have no idea how they did it but it's gonna be a pain to explain to the principle."
Dani James was a lanky seventeen year old girl with bright green hair and a very odd personality. She was generally quiet and reserved due to her outer appearance but deep down, Dani had a dark sense of humor, great taste in literature and music, and was an excellent artist. We met our freshman year in, ironically, an art class; I had been paired with her for the first big project we had for a mid term.
"Or you could just grab your shit and walk away." Dani shrugs while ruffling my hair and grabbing her binder from the bottom of the locker. I sigh again as I grab my textbook and art case before closing the small space and locking it again. 'It's gonna be a long ass day.' I think to myself as we head for class.
